Burials During Winter

In Quebec, despite the harsh climate we face during certain periods of winter, many cemeteries carry out burials year-round, without interruption. For others, burials are generally suspended. Coffins are then stored in a vault from November 1 to May 14.

The Vault

The vault is a building located on the cemetery grounds. It is built on concrete and is not insulated, in order to keep embalmed bodies cold. Small openings are made in the walls so air can circulate. Despite this, the high level of humidity can alter the condition of the coffins. Four to eight coffins can be stored on shelves placed on each side of the entrance. When space is limited or when no vault is available, arrangements are made between cemeteries to meet the need. This place is not accessible to families.

As for ashes, they are simply kept in a room of the funeral home that handled the funeral.

At Thaw

At the time of the thaw, the family is invited to attend a ceremony during the burial of the deceased. Two witnesses must be present to sign the burial register. This register becomes proof that the body has indeed been interred. Those attending the ceremony may introduce personalized rituals to soften this emotionally difficult moment. The support of relatives is always appreciated by the bereaved during this event.
