The loving family of Vernon “Midge” Middleton are very saddened to announce his peaceful passing, at age 90, at the Teck Pioneer Residence in Kirkland Lake, Ontario in the early morning hours of October 22, 2024.

Midge is survived by his beloved wife Anne (nee Currie) with whom he shared 69 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they lovingly raised two children; Jamie (Shanea, son Jarid, daughter Sye) and Elizabeth (John). Always devoted to his family, Midge was also grandfather to Alyssa and great-grandfather to Butch. Also left to mourn are many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins and family friends.

Midge was predeceased; by his parents, Mary (nee Harpell) and Albert Middleton; his four older brothers and sisters-in-law, Edwin Goldwyn (Claire), Floyd (Evelyn), Allen (Jane) and Mervyn; his sisters-in-law, Catherine Dinnen and Joan Grant; his brothers-in-law, Donald Dinnen and Mervyn Grant; and his daughter-in-law, Angie Middleton.

Our Dad was a proud, life-long Northerner. He was born in the Charlton-area, the youngest of five sons, earning him the well-loved nickname “Midge”. At age six, his family moved to Chaput Hughes, Ontario, where as a teenager, he met the love of his life, Anne Elizabeth Currie. On June 18, 1955 the happy couple were married at the Trinity United Church in Kirkland Lake, Ontario. They built their life together in Chaput Hughes, surrounded by family and friends. Dad proudly worked as a Hoist Engineer at Caswell Construction, a driver/salesman at Northern Canada Supply, and he became a very successful travelling salesman for eighteen years with Haviland Transport, Disston Saws and Brights Wines. In 1978, Midge and Anne decided to make the leap into the small business arena in Kirkland Lake. They purchased the Teck Hotel and ran it very successfully until its operation was passed to first, their son Jamie, and then to their daughter Elizabeth in 2006. Dad was extremely pleased to see the family business continuing, and the Teck is still proudly operating in Kirkland Lake to this day. His dedication and work ethic were on daily display within the business, and these qualities are his legacy, carried on by his children.

Midge was a proud member of many local service clubs, including the Association of Canadian Travellers (ACT) and the Freemasons of Ontario, where his memberships ran for sixty years. In 1985, a winning Wintario ticket for $10,000.00 allowed Midge and Anne to purchase their dream property at Rosegrove Beach on Round Lake, just south of Kirkland Lake. After many summers of hard work and with the help of numerous family and friends, Midge built a family cottage and transformed the property into a little slice of heaven. It became the family gathering spot for numerous special occasions. As was our Dad’s way, everyone was always welcome there to enjoy good food and drink, and to make treasured memories.

In the final years of his life, Midge moved into the Teck Pioneer Residence to join Anne and help with her care. He was always happiest when he was by her side. The family would like to thank everyone at the TPR for their excellent care, especially in the last few months. Dad wanted to specifically thank the nurses and personal support workers who went above and beyond and became like family to him: James, Savannah, Erika, Becky, Marlene, Amanda, Megan, Brenda, Valerie, Jessica, Cheryl, Sarah, Lisa and Jen. When we could not be there, every one of you were always there for both him and our Mom.

A special thank you to our cousin, Mary Jo Broughton for her constant love and support. You will always be like a daughter to both Mom and Dad.

Cremation has taken place. Donations in Midge’s memory can be made to the Teck Pioneer Residence, where Anne continues to reside. As per his wishes, there will be no funeral service. A celebration of Midge’s life will be held on Saturday, June 14 th , 2025 on what would have been Dad’s 91 st birthday. All family and friends are invited to gather at the Middleton family property, Rosegrove Beach on Round Lake, #5155, Highway 112, Kirkland Lake, Ontario.

We are very proud to say that family meant everything to our Dad. We will miss him so very much.

Cheers to you Dad and to all the wonderful memories.
