MCGINNIS, Verna

1940 - 2023

It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Verna Margaret McGinnis (nee Conrad) on December 6, 2023, at Blanche River Health – Kirkland Lake Site, with her family at her side.

Verna was predeceased by her husband, Leon Dale (“Bud”), her parents, Thomas and Margaret (Holden) Conrad, her infant brother, Ronald and her son, Dale. Verna will be lovingly remembered by her children, Stella (Todd) Morgan, and Wayne (Melanie Langlois) McGinnis as well as her daughter-in-law, Carrianne McGinnis. She will also be deeply missed by her grandchildren, Alexa, Grant, Laiken, Erika, Eva, Kelsey, Chelyn, and Thomas, as well as many great- grandchildren. She is survived by her siblings, Tom (Connie) Conrad, Frank (Louise) Conrad, Christine (Allan) Bigelow, and Anne (Claude) Bougie as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Born December 14 th , 1940, Verna was a life-long and proud Kirkland Lake resident. She was an avid Toronto Maple Leafs and Blue Jays fan, rarely missing a game on TV. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, spending countless hours with her grandchildren and tending to their every need. Throughout her life, she was a volunteer with countless organizations and was a loyal member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 87, spending many hours working on countless initiatives with her friends and colleagues. In addition, she was the first woman-member of the ACT in Canada, volunteered in schools and with many other local organizations. She was always generous with her time and her love for everyone she encountered.

Our family will be forever grateful to all the healthcare heroes who provided Verna with exceptional care and great friendship through the years.

Cremation will take place. In the spring, the family will hold a funeral mass and Legion service in honour of Verna.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion - Branch 87, Teck Pioneer Residence Activity Fund, the Palliative Care Unit at Blanche River Health, or a charity of your choice.

I have so many memories growing up as a kid in Kirkland Lake at the McGinnis household. It was always a buzz of activity playing in the yard and skidooing around the back ninety/King George school ground. Verna was such a character and always kept us in line. She will be sadly missed but fondly remembered. Big hugs go out to you all. ️️

Many memories of Verna through our common connection to the Ladies Auxiliary —the local meetings and conventions — the Provincial Conventions around the province — what fun we had !

Sorry to hear of Verna's passing. Such great lady full of spunk. I really enjoyed the time I got to know Verna doing home help for her. She loved her Toronto Maple Leafs. Had many great chats and laughs with this wonderful lady. She will surely be missed.
