1925 - 2019

Surrounded by her loving family, Rita passed away peacefully at the CHUS-Fleurimont on March 29th, 2019 at the age of 93.   

Rita is predeceased by her husband John and her youngest daughter Lucy. She leaves to mourn her daughter Diane and sons Hans, Gerry, Charles and Rene as well as their spouses. She will be dearly missed by her 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren, numerous other relatives and dear friends living in Canada and in Holland.

Visitation will take place at the Cass Funeral Home, 900 Clough St., Ayer's Cliff, Quebec, (www.casshomes.ca), on Saturday, April 6th, 2019 from 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.  A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. at the St-Barthelemy church. Private burial at a later date.

 The family wishes to sincerely thank the doctors, nurses and staff at CHUS Fleurimont, 4th floor, for the attentive and compassionate care given to Rita.

 In memory of Rita, donations to the CHUS Foundation, 530, 10e Avenue S, Sherbrooke, QC, J1G 2R9, would be appreciated by the family. Rita will be missed by all who knew her.

Sorry to hear of the passing of your mother.
She endured heavy bombing of her village and home farm at age 19 and was moved, evacuated, 100 km to the north east. Together with most of the village of Groesbeek to Groenlo, at that moment a safe place. Only 6 months later the Netherlands were liberated after heavy fighting with the Germans and again she survived the war so close by.
The good news was that the friendliest guy of Groenlo had met her in between his “underground” fight against the Germans.
After settling in the Groenlo neighbourhood, they heard about the plans to emigrate to the country that liberated Holland. Those plans were made by Wim after coming back from a four year mission to get Indonesia back from Japanese occupation.
Because of their people skills John and Riek managed to get a farm of their own and so did Wim and Dien in Quebec and within 2 years after landing. The rest is history!
One memorable thing I remember was a letter at the first Xmas in which John wrote that is was so cold out there that you had to walk backwards while peeing...
John and Riek had so many stories and tales to tell and experienced so many things , that you can easily write two books about them.

Fam. Brus

Although there was an ocean between us, there was always contact. My first memory is of 1973. Oom Johan and tante Riek visited Holland. There was always a smile on their face, they clearly enjoyed life.
Much later in 2012 we visited Canada with our daugthers. Tante Riek took us out for shopping and was a "suikertante" for our daugthers.
She was ahead of her time being an ambitious woman.
We will not forget her.
We wish you strength with this loss.
