1928 - 2019

Phyllis Elizabeth Mary McKay Gates

1928-2019

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Phyllis McKay Gates. Phyllis, aged 90, passed away on Saturday, January 12, 2019, at St. Patrick’s Home of Ottawa, Ontario. Phyllis was born on April 29, 1928, in RM of Siglunes, to Ivy Elizabeth Chase and Callen Hardesty McKay, the second eldest of a family that continued to grow. Phyllis went on to love and nourish her own large family. She married George Gates (RCAF) in Winnipeg in 1948 and moved around the country with organizational skills beyond compare. Her home in Aylmer, Québec was always filled with family, good food, and chocolate bars. Phyllis had a passion for music, her award-winning garden and flowers, her beloved dogs, and long walks greeting her neighbors with a wave and a smile. As a young woman, she worked for a large department store in Winnipeg, and in Ottawa was a Department Manager for 19 years until her retirement in 1993. Phyllis was most proud of finally receiving her Métis Status in 2005. Left to cherish her memories are her children Karen (Rae) Moses, Gary (Carole) Gates, Kevan (Patricia) Gates, Sharon Gates, Susan (Mounir) Sami, Graham (Ann) Gates, Craig (Leah) Gates, her grandchildren Keith, Shannon, Yasmeen, Mark, Frederick, Shahir, Christina, Breanne, Melissa, Andrew, Kealty, Keegan, Ashleigh and Kobey, as well as numerous greatgrandchildren, nieces and nephews. She will also be missed by her good friends, caregivers, and neighbors. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers Walter, Mervyn, John (Jack), Garnet and Dennis, and sisters Ivy Calleen Beaudry, Garnetta MacLennan, and Leona Mymryk.

A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, January 23 at 10:00 am at the Coopérative funéraire de l’Outaouais, 95, boul. de la Cité-des-Jeunes, Gatineau, Québec.

For those who wish to do so, flowers or a donation to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
