Lacroix, Jean Paul

LACROIX, Jean Paul

1972 - 2023

Jean Paul Joseph Lacroix passed away on April 8, 2023 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 50 years old. Paul was born on November 19, 1972 in Cochrane, Ontario. His family moved to Kirkland Lake in 1978, where Paul has resided ever since. He loved his community and had a kind word and time for everyone who crossed his path.

Paul will be greatly missed by his fiancée Tracy Wheeler, his children Sawyer, Coleman, Sage, and Wynn, and Tracy’s son Ryan. He is survived by his parents Roger and Anne Lacroix, siblings Marc (Félix), Hélène (Rich), and Lise (Tom), and nephews Matthew, Luc, Benjamin, Alexander, and Jude.

Paul was strong, funny, friendly, a little stubborn, and incredibly generous with his time. Nothing brought Paul more joy than Tracy, his children, and his dogs. He loved being active, watching his children play sports and his daughters dance, and spending every moment he could with his family creating memories that they will treasure.

It was very important to Paul to give back to his community. His passion for hockey as a player, referee, and coach, and his love of sports in general, allowed him to do so. Over the years, Paul coached youth soccer, baseball, and hockey from Timbits to the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners Junior A team. Coach Paul epitomized the true meaning of the word coach. He took the time to get to know each player, recognize their potential, and give them the support and kindness they needed to succeed both as players and people.

To the coaches, players, and parents of G&R Shortt Contractors Ltd. U11 Rep Blue Devils, your thoughtfulness throughout the hockey season provided great comfort to Paul. We simply cannot thank
you enough. In addition, we would like to thank Grandma Nancy and Grandpa Jed, friends and family, the Kirkland Lake community at large, Paul’s lifelong friend Justin Allison, and the staff at Blanche River Health. Each comforting word, act of kindness, and story shared helped make this difficult time a little bit more bearable.

In remembrance of Paul and his love of sports, the Paul Lacroix Memorial Hockey Fund has been established. If you wish to donate to help kids in need play hockey, you may send an email transfer or
donate in person at the Kirkland Lake TD Bank:

Email transfer: paullacroixmemorial@outlook.com

In person: Transit: 27442, Institution: 004, Account #: 6381049

In addition, what Paul would cherish most, is the donation of your time to others.

Friends and family are welcome to attend a celebration of Paul’s life, which will be held at Northern College, 140 Government Road East, on Monday, April 17, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

My sincerest condolences on the passing of your son. May love of him give you and all of your family strength at this time of adjustment. And may his memory be a source of Blessings for all of you...

The Lacroix Families, Tracy, and Justin

There are no words that can come close to expressing what this loss means to so many, including myself.
Paul was incredibly dedicated to community sports, and to his children, in ways that cannot be matched. From playing to officiating to coaching, his efforts were incredible and invaluable. I never figured out how he found the time for everything in a day.
To Roger and Anne and Paul's siblings, and Tracy and Justin (who was as well his family), I extend my deepest condolences. This one hurts a lot.

Paul’s family

What a shock to find this obituary of Paul today. He was the epitome of a life well lived. My deepest condolences to his family. I met Paul many years ago when he was the umpire for baseball and both my boys played. He took a liking to my son Adam and use to tease him a lot but in a good way. Adam was a hard hitter and one day Paul started chanting spanky, spanky because he said adam reminded him of spanky from the little rascals. Well the team started chanting as well and then every game after that adam was known as Spanky. Needless to say that nickname stuck and he was later more known as Spanx. A lot of people thought that was his real name. I always remembered Paul’s jestering spirit as he taught the kids sports. He was a kind man and always smiling.
Fondly remembered by the Pearce family.

Brenda and Derrick Pearce, April 12, 2023

The Entire Family

I knew Paul professionally through Gordon's Stationery, as I am a Territory Manager for the Global Furniture Group. When our conversations were not about business or office furniture products, they quickly turned to Hockey. I will always remember how passionate Paul was about Hockey, at every level, grassroots to the NHL...he cared about the game, and wanted the game to be available to everyone. That's who Paul was, always looking out for others. Paul will be missed, but his memory will live forever!!!
So sorry for your loss! My deepest condolences to all the family!

Paul's Family and Loved Ones

I wanted to offer my sincerest condolences to Paul's family and those closest to him. He was taken from this world far too soon.

I did not know Paul well in a personal sense, but interacted with him regularly over the years in a professional capacity.

He was always respectful, friendly and had a great sense of humour...which I always appreciated about him. He was a genuinely nice person.

What we often hear most of those slighlty out of reach is how they are characterized by mutual connections. To me, and so many, Paul was a friendly and hard working member of the community, and a dedicated father who always waved in passing or stopped for a chat when we would see each other.

He always had my respect and set an example of what a good man can be.

Jeremy G, April 12, 2023

Words cannot express the sorrow that we feel for you all with Paul’s recent passing. Paul was always so full of energy and laughter! He was passionate with any activity he took on giving it 100%…from Hockey, to running, to training at the gym. I recall his workouts at the Joe… he trained hard, maintaining a pace that few could follow. He was a bundle of energy and a pleasure to have around, as his passion for life was truly contagious. He will be truly missed by us all ️.

Tracy and Paul's Family

My sincere condolences to Tracy and Paul's family. Such fond memories of Paul. He helped mentor me as a young umpire with the local baseball association. He was confident and did not put up with disgruntled parents, lol. He was firm yet fair. He was a great pitcher too. I remember he was a lefty and threw that ball with vigor. I learned a lot from him over those summers. Years passed and most of my visits back home would include siting's of Paul running at a good clip training for half marathons. By the messages on this post, it is apparent Paul has touched many people and his passing is being felt by the entire KL community. I hope you'll be able to take comfort in your positive memories of Paul over time.

Lacroix Family

Very saddened to hear of Paul’s passing.
Paul was the Minor Hockey referee supervisor back when I reffed in the mid 2000s. He was always very involved and took the time to teach us younger referees (he also had just the right amount of patience dealing with teenager refs at 7am making 20$ a game).
It was great running into Paul after the refereeing days - especially when he would ref my games. As a defensemen going into the corners or chasing after the puck, Paul would give a quick shout (“time”) to let me know if I’d have a bit of room to maneuver. It was always something I appreciated.
Having known Paul for a short time, I am not surprised to hear of Paul’s impact on the community, but am very sorry that it has ended so short.
Thinking of you all during this difficult time.

Family & Friends of Paul

I first met Paul through his work at Gordon’s when I started at the Hospital. Over the years, no matter the task he was working on, he always chatted about his kids, asked about mine and we always landed on sports. My son is close in age to Coleman- so we often talked about the boys’ hockey season and baseball in the summer. Paul had a great sense of humour and was just a good guy all around. My thoughts are with his family, friends and all of the kids he has come across in coaching/officiating.

I had the pleasure of officiating with Paul over the years in the NOJHL. I always looked for his name on my assignments when I would be traveling north for games. He was a gentleman, and a pleasure to work with. Please accept my deepest sympathies.

The Lacroix Family and Friends

My deepest condolences to the Lacroix's and all of Paul's friends.
It was awesome knowing Paul since a young age. In recent years, hearing about all he had accomplished with kids and his dedication to sports in Kirkland Lake was truly special.
