Garahan, James Edward

GARAHAN, James Edward

1939 - 2023

It is with sadness that we announce the death of our beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, friend -  James Edward Garahan.  Jim died peacefully at the Temiskaming Hospital on March 27, 2023, shy of his 84th birthday in April, after thoughtful care from so many hospital staff members and visits from friends over the past 7 weeks.

Jim is survived by his wife of 54+ years, Kathleen (O’Connell) Garahan, his children Moe Garahan and Bill Garahan, his sister Zita Drake in New York, his sisters-in-law Margaret Arthur and Susan (Jarl) Sundve, his nieces Elaina Hamelin, Crystal O’Connell, his ‘adopted’ nephews David and Stephen Mate and many other loved nieces, nephews and cousins across Canada, his grandchildren Tessa, Owen, and the Bukuru children, his cousins Philip and John Davis and the extended Davis family from Fort Coulonge, cousin Mary Diamond in Sudbury, and much loved cousins in Ireland, where he travelled many times.

He is predeceased by his parents William and Ellen (Davis) Garahan, who raised Jim in Timmins, and by his sister Maureen (Momay) Garahan.

Jim was a young athlete (basketball, football, hockey), musician (violin), and outdoorsman (hunting, fishing, camping), educated in Timmins (elementary and secondary) and Kingston (Regiopolis). He then received his Certified General Accountant (CGA) designation, practicing first at Campsall Electric and then opening his own business for the next 50 years.  He gave generously of his time and knowledge to many organizations, including Scouting, as long-time youth member to Leader to Regional Director (supporting cub car rallies, clubs and camps), the local Soccer Association (becoming a coach without ever having played, due to a shortage and having kids wanting to play!), and the Association for Community Living (supporting people living in the area with developmental challenges) to name a few.  Jim acted as a volunteer treasurer for many organizations, was a life-long member of the Catholic church and became a 4th degree Knight within the Knights of Columbus.  He was an enthusiastic life-time member of the Horne Granite Curling Club (including starting and managing the Boxing Day Family Curling Bonspiel), supported his wife within Pro-Vie Tri-Town Right to Life for 40+ years, supported his daughter’s organization Just Food in Ottawa, and started the Men’s Prostate Cancer Group after surviving from it himself.  Jim was always ready with a helping hand for neighbours and friends.

The community is invited to celebrate the life of Jim at a Visitation at the Timiskaming Funeral Co-operative (formerly Perrin) on 128 Whitewood Ave W on Sunday, April 2 between 2-4pm, and/or at the Funeral Monday, April 3 at Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church for a Mass at 11am, and/or at the reception for lunch, held in the church basement at 12pm.  All are welcome.

For those who wish, a memorial contribution made in Jim’s name to one of the following organizations he supported would be greatly appreciated: Knights of Columbus (Box 341, New Liskeard, ON), Pro-Vie Tri-Town Right to Life (Box 842, New Liskeard, ON), Community Cancer Care (www.community cancercare.ca) or Just Food (www.justfood.ca).

Our northern community has lost a great man, a strong volunteer and an amazing source of strength and determination. Always positive in whatever he did be it curling, music festival, Knights of Columbus, his business - I could go on for ever - just a wonderful man. Quiet but went about his business in a professional manner. To Jim'\s family, please accept our sincere sympathy on his passing and your loss of some one so dear. Rest in peace Jim.

Sincere condolences to the family. I had the extreme pleasure of knowing Jim when he served on the Board of the North Bay Chapter of the Certified General Accountants of Ontario. Despite the travel, Jim rarely missed a meeting.

His enthusiasm and positive attitude was always felt and appreciated. Just a wonderful and kind man. I so enjoyed my time exchanging stories with Jim. A fine gentleman in every sense. R.I.P. Jim knowing the impact you had on so many.

The Garahan gamily- Kathleen Garahan -Moe and Bill

I wish to express my sympathy to Kathleen and her family on the loss of her husband Jim-I was a roommate of Jim's at Regiopolis College in Kingston67 years ago and always considered Jim a great friend. Always remember those early years and how we looked forward to the baking Jim's mother would send us from Timmons . While we lived far apart over the years Jim always stayed in touch with his friends and I looked forward to his calls and visits when he came to Ottawa. Jim was a special person who loved people new adventures and new opportunities .
May God bless Kathleen and her family during these difficult times and of course Jim as well--I will miss him

Sending our deepest sympathy to you all on the very sad passing of Jim. We have many great memories of happy times spent with Jim & family on their visits to Ireland. Especially precious the visits to the Garahan homestead which can boast 6th generation resident at the family farm. Also enjoyed our wonderful trip through Montreal, Quebec & Nova Scotia with our great hosts Jim & Kathie ( in particular our time at the Celtic Cross near St Laurence river).
