Mes sincères condoléances.
Joseph Guy Yves David Pelletier passed away suddenly and peacefully on January 15, 2024, at 92, having lived a full and happy life. He was predeceased by his parents Joseph Émile Pelletier, teacher and school principal, and Lydia Rioux, music teacher; by his sisters and brothers-in-law Marguerite (Pierre Beaulieu), Thérèse, Élise (Maurice Castonguay; Jean Miron), and Louise (Kenneth Lefebvre); and by his brother and sister-in-law Jean-Louis (Lucille Demers). Also predeceased by his stepson Paul M. Colonnier (Marie L. Civetta). He was the devoted second husband of Fernande Colonnier, née Trudeau, and the proud father of stepdaughter Louise Colonnier and son Jean Yves Pelletier. Grandfather of four and great-grandfather of three, he will be missed by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and by his many nephews, nieces, friends, and neighbours.
Born in Ottawa, Guy grew up in Sandy Hill, close to Église Sacré-Coeur, where he attended École Garneau and the University of Ottawa High School. He studied at the University of Ottawa and the University of Toronto (College of Education), and his love of learning carried him through a B.A., B.Ed, and M.Ed. He undertook postgraduate studies and taught in London, England. He will be remembered as a teacher, coach, and mentor to students, having had close to 200 student teachers in his classes, and having supervised many extracurricular student clubs, sports teams, and cultural events. "Tintin" / "Mr. P" was indeed renowned for the kindness and caring he exhibited for the many thousands of students he guided over his 38 years in the teaching profession. He taught in many Ottawa schools, at the elementary level: St. Joseph, St. Brigid, St. Leo, and Assumption (1954-1959), and at the secondary level: University of Ottawa High School (1959-1970), Écoles secondaires Belcourt (1970-71), Champlain (1985-87), and De La Salle (1972-84, 1987-93). He also taught briefly at St. Patrick’s College and the University of Ottawa School of Education and Psychology, and in Haïti.
Guy volunteered with many professional, community, and service organizations in Ottawa and Gatineau, serving in numerous capacities for L’Association des enseignantes et des enseignants franco-ontariens (AEFO) and Les scouts du Canada, district d’Ottawa. He was an active member and choir member of Sacré-Coeur and Sainte-Geneviève parishes, as well as churchwarden for a time at Jean XXIII parish in Gatineau. Founding member and subsequently president of La Caisse populaire Sainte-Geneviève and Le club Richelieu Laurier, he served for many years as board member and president of La Société franco-ontarienne d’histoire et de généalogie (Ottawa-Carleton branch), L’Association des familles Pelletier (Québec City), Riviera Condominium Community Board of Directors (Ottawa), and L’Association des aînés et aînées de Cité-Jardin (Gatineau). A lifelong swimmer and a keen sailor, he was a long-time member and volunteer at the Rockcliffe Yacht Club.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of Chartwell Cité-Jardin Retirement Residence, where Guy and Fern made a home and established many friendships during their 20-year stay. The family also thanks team leaders and care team members at Hôpital de Gatineau, 6th floor, for their respectful and attentive support.
A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m., on March 2, 2024, at Paroisse Cathédrale Saint-Joseph, 245 St. Joseph Boulevard, Gatineau (parking behind the church on Berri St.), followed immediately by a reception. The family will receive condolences from 10:30 a.m. Private interment at a later date at Notre-Dame Cemetery, Ottawa.
