STORMONT, Evelyn Elizabeth

1929 - 2024

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Evelyn Elizabeth (Mills) Stormont after a brief illness. Surrounded by family, she passed away at the age of 95, on Friday, June 14, 2024 at the Blanche River Health - Kirkland Lake Hospital.

Evelyn was a sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and a great-grandmother. She will always be remembered as a very loving, caring and giving person.

She is survived by her children Bill (Lyse) of Tarzwell, Pam Young (Dean) of Dane, Karen Coxen (Sean) of London, ON, and Ann Fox (Ron) of King Kirkland. Grandmother to Logan (Allie), Caleigh Brisson (Joel), Aislinn Vanderburg (Frank), Lachlan (Megan), Shaman, Graelon, Devin Young (Jo-Anne), Ashley Aubry (John), and Shelbie Fox. Great grandmother to Jack, Emry, Jillian, Kenton, Sadie, Hadley, and Ella. Aunt to Rob Shail (Wendy) as well as Bill Saunders (and family) and her niece Deborah Seaton.

She is predeceased by her parents Frank and Ethel Mills, her infant daughter Mary (April 13,1966), her husband James George Stormont (May 21,1997), brother-in-law Robert Shail (April 27,1997), brother Raymond Mills (April 21,1989), brother-in-law Fred Seaton (November 12, 2012), sister-in-law Maisie (Stormont) Shail (March 7, 2013), sister-in-law Daphne Mills (April 23, 2018), sister Pamela Mills (December 10, 2019), nephew Jim Shail (January 20, 2023) and sister Muriel (March 27, 2024).

Born in Crondall, England, Evelyn departed Liverpool by boat on the Canadian Pacific shipping line on January 13, 1954. Accompanying her were two nurses who worked with her at the Grove Road Maternity Hospital in Luton. She landed in New Brunswick and traveled by train to Kirkland Lake where she accepted a position as a registered nurse at the Kirkland & District Hospital on the OBS Maternity ward.

While working at the hospital, Maisie Shail introduced her brother Jim Stormont to Evelyn. After a brief courtship they were married on July 16, 1955 at St. Peter’s on-the-Rock Anglican Church in Kirkland Lake. She was a long time resident of Chaput Hughes, and Tarzwell and, most recently, she made Teck Pioneer Residence her home. After over 3 decades of being a nurse at the Kirkland Lake and District Hospital, she retired to enjoy over three decades dedicated to the charitable and generous works of her faith and gave unselfishly of her time to create memories with her family.

We would like to thank the staff at TPR and Blanche River Health for the care and kindness she received.

Cremation has taken place.

A celebration of life for Evelyn Stormont will be held on Saturday July 20th, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at St- Peter’s Anglican Church with refreshments to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Capital Building Fund C/O St Peters Anglican Church P.O. Box 692 Kirkland Lake Ontario P2N-3K1 would be appreciated.

The Family of Mrs. Evelyn Stormont

Please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of Mrs. Stormont. Sad to see the loss of another of the old time dedicated hardworking nurses of the Kirkland and District Hospital. I always remember Mrs. Stormont as a fine, quiet, caring person. They just don't make many nurses like her and Maisie Shail anymore in my opinion. May the family take comfort in knowing Mrs. Stormont was loved by so many. Rest in peace.

She was a gift. I remember spending nights in her Chaput home with Ann...always so polite and had a smile no matter what. She will be truly missed but she has joined her loved ones previously lost and is at "peace". Please find faith in these trying times.

Reading about Evelyn brought back old memories of the Kirkland & District Hospital in the 1960's. Her passing is sad but she did have a long, rewarding life. When I first met her many years ago, her kind, caring personality shone through. In the hospital lab, we never referred to her as Evelyn but always "Mrs. Stormont". We had a great deal of respect for her as she was never demanding or unreasonable with other staff members. We need more kind, dedicated and soft spoken nurses to set the example that Mrs. Stormont did all those years ago. I am sure you will miss her terribly.
