ALLEN MAZEAU, Dorothy

1947 - 2024

Dorothy Allen Mazeau

June 1947 – October 2024

Born in Winthrop, Massachusetts and raised in Weymouth, Dorothy moved to Toronto in 1974. There she worked as an architect while raising her son, Justin. She always had a positive outlook on life, a smile on her face and a silly streak a mile wide. She wouldn’t always show it but if you were around her long enough, she couldn’t always hide it either.

When Dorothy moved to Caledon she branched out into real estate, becoming a realtor and shortly thereafter began actively promoting home sharing in earnest, in what became a multi-decade passion project, having shared a home herself for most of her adult life. She gave seminars and launched her business Golden HomeSharing Connections to help older adults learn about the benefits of home-sharing and facilitate finding compatible housemates.

Dorothy always seemed to make friends quickly, and the energy she brought with her made a memorable impression on everyone she met. Living in Caledon for over 20 years, she was active in numerous organizations, including the Probus Club of Bolton, the Achill Choral Society, and the Caledon East United Church.  She then moved to Lennoxville in December 2022 and did it all again, quickly joining the University Women’s Club, the Lennoxville United Church choir, and the Bishops University Singers, singing being one of her many delights.

When cancer came for a visit in early 2023, she just kept moving forward, not one to let such trifling things slow her down. This year she began working full-time on a fellowship putting together a report with The Samuel Centre for Social Connectedness, Canada HomeShare, and HelpAge Canada on home sharing, furthering her advocacy for community living. That report was completed on Tuesday, September 24th, and with that her work was done.

After putting up with the many annoyances of cancer for 18 months, she gave the disease its comeuppance and took it down with her on October 5th, never giving it the satisfaction of removing the smile from her face, or silly from her heart.

Dorothy/Dottie/Dot is survived by her brother Ted, sisters Sue and Bev, and her son Justin.

There will be a service on Saturday, October 12th at 11:00 am at the Lennoxville United Church and livestreamed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1zgk_wcj6I

Justin, friends and family of Dorothy

Dear all,
My name is Nicole Clarke; I am the Executive Director of HelpAge Canada where Dorothy completed her research fellowship these past few months. Dorothy was an inspiration to our team. Her energy, exuberance and passion were bountiful. Despite facing the personal scare and challenge of cancer, she took on her fellowship with us wholeheartedly and was dedicated to learning and excellence in this work at every step. Dorothy leaves a legacy with many whom she encouraged to home-share and through this, find companionship during their life. We will do our best to carry this mantle forward through our homesharing program. Wishing you peace and comfort during this difficult time.

Dorothy

I got to know Dorothy through her work on shared housing. We share this effort. Initially, we were two solopreneurs hoping to get people to see the benefits. For several years Dorothy and I would rendezvous in Vermont somewhere and she would buy a quantity of my book and take them back to Canada. Soon after I decided that my effort should be the nonprofit Sharing Housing, Inc. I asked her to be on the board. She jumped at it. She has been a phenomenal treasurer teaching this no-nothing how to look at a budget and understand our finances. In fact, we have a financial report we call "Dorothy's report" because it's a format she introduced. It will forever be "Dorothy's report." I had no idea how sick she was. She came to Brattleboro in August for our strategic planning meeting, cheerful and full of life. We will most definitely miss her. Condolences to the family and especially to Justin.

Family

It was much sorrow that I learnt of Dorothy’s passing. We used to walk the Caledon Trails almost daily having many great discussions on many many subjects not always agreeing but always agreeing to disagree if we didnt. When Dorothy last returned to Caledon she was her usual cheerful self and gave no hint of
the return of the cancer
She was always very supportive to me during my wifes long battle with dementia.
She will sorely missed my her friends and family
God Bless
Peter Wright

Justin

My condolences.
Thanks for informing me.
Dorothy and I knew each other back to
RISD in Providence, when there were only four or five
women in the entire Architectural department.
She was always positive, and practical.

I ddn't know too much of her more recent life.

May my support
warm your heart
