Deborah “Debby” Ann Christie
October 30th, 1951 – December 8th, 2024
Debby passed away at Hotel-Dieu on December 8th, 2024, at the age of 73, after years of ongoing health struggles. Although heartbroken, we take solace in the knowledge that she has finally found lasting peace.
Growing up on the family homestead, outside of Sherbrooke, Debby developed a deep connection with the land and the animals she shared it with. As a child Debby could often be found outdoors tending to the farm animals, participating in 4H or picking apples in the orchard. She was a feisty child, extremely intelligent, who set exceptionally high standards for those she loved. She joyfully terrorized her siblings, ensuring everyone followed rules. Her uncanny awareness of those around her developed into a deep and everlasting bond with her family.
In 1970, she left home to follow in her mother’s footsteps, attending The Mack School of Nursing in Ontario. Graduating in 1972, her time at The Mack shaped the remainder of her life. During those years she made friendships that lasted for the rest of her days, and acquired the skills that would help define who she was.
One of the most cherished periods of her life united her love of nursing, nature and connection. Debby found a deep sense of purpose, belonging and personal happiness post-graduation at posting north of Thompson River, Manitoba.
She returned to homestead in the late 70s to care for her mother and remained to care for her father and the family farm for another 40 years. Driven by her sense of duty, and family, she worked tirelessly to maintain the home and land she loved. She continued nursing and spent the majority of her career at The Wales Home, fostering her deepest and most meaningful relationships
No matter where she went, Debby could always cultivate a friendship, she truly cherished getting to know people, hearing their story and sharing hers. We know she will be remembered by many as an enduring friend, with a love of reading and cats; someone who never missed a phone call, or an opportunity to share her thoughts and opinions. Constantly connecting with those she cared about—we know those she loved, will miss the sound of her voice and the increased ringing of their telephones.
Debby is survived by her sisters, Rebekah (Brett) Naiden and Diana (Robert) Christie, her nieces and nephews; Michelle, Jaclyn, James, Matthew and Kate. Seven great-nieces and nephews, her cherished cousins and her dearest friends Pat and Bernice. She is predeceased by her parents Andrew and Myrtle (nee Page) Christie, and her brother Andrew Christie.
Debby’s family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at the Manoir Sherbrooke, many of whom became dear friends of Debby’s, her dedicated family doctor, the healthcare providers who assisted her at Hotel-Dieu and the friends who stood by her with love, acceptance, and kindness in her times of need. We would also like to express our deep gratitude to Lynn and Robin, for their immeasurable generosity. In accordance with her final wishes, Debby’s final resting place will be near her sisters in Alberta. A small celebration of life will be held at later date. In lieu of flowers please, consider donating to a local animal rescue organization in your area.
We encourage you to celebrate Debby’s life by phoning someone you care about, tell them about your day, the weather, what’s on tv, or how lightning can strike twice; make it a habit—connection truly is the greatest and most lasting gift.

I was happy to have had the chance to get to know Debbie in her last days as a caregiver. She always said a Happy How Are You to me. I was sadden of her passing, my sympathies to all.
She has peace now and will be watching over us.
