BUCKLEY, David Michael

Buckley, David Michael

1930-2024

David Michael Buckley, age 94, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2024, surrounded by family at Montfort Hospital in Ottawa, Canada. He is survived by his loving wife, Jane; daughters, Gillian and Penny; sons-in-law, Don and Chris; and grandchildren, Matthew, Sara, Jamie, Annabel, Cooper, and Laura.

Mike was born to Peter and Majorie Buckley on February 23, 1930, in Montreal, Quebec. He grew up in Hudson, Quebec, and moved to Ottawa to study engineering.

His passion for sailing led him to meet the love of his life, Jane. Before they could marry, Jane had him join her parents on a hut-to-hut skiing trip in Europe, where Mike impressed them with his character, sweet nature, and spirit as he skinned and skied alongside the more experienced group. From that moment on, Jane's parents adored him. Over the years, Mike and Jane enjoyed spending time together with their dogs, playing tennis, skiing, and sailing competitively, ultimately winning the Canadian National Y-Flyer Championships in 1976.

After moving to Ottawa, Mike dedicated 27 years of his career as an engineer in the wind tunnel at the National Research Council (NRC).

Mike found joy in small moments. He loved spending days puttering around the cottage and was an ardent fan of the Ottawa 67s, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Redblacks, and the Toronto Blue Jays. But most of all, he treasured people. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, always putting others’ needs before his own. He saw the best in everyone and offered selfless and unconditional love and support. His ability to love, care, laugh, trust, and forgive will forever be remembered by those lucky enough to know him.

A memorial service to celebrate Mike's life is being planned for early fall in Ottawa. We invite you to join us in remembering and honoring him. If you would like to attend, please email Penny at austenp@mac.com for details. Donations in Mike's memory can be made to the Hockey Canada Foundation Assist Fund.

Not everyone one meets leaves a lasting impression.
You always listened and talked to me. You cared about my health and well being offering solutions and suggestions. You liked me for who I was. As your care-giver, we laughed a lot together - sharing our lunch as we watched people through the kitchen window taking walks or walking their dogs.
I do consider myself fortunate to have shared in your life and to have had an opportunity to be useful to you. You became my dad too.
May the Good Lord receive you and rest your soul.

What a lovely obituary. My condolences to you both. He deserved the “good innings” he got. I was indeed lucky to have known him.

Jane

Dear Jane. I am so sorry to hear about Mike. I have such fond memories of you both during our time together at OVBCC. You were both always so kind and helpful and always were free with helpful words of advice and encouragement. You both had wonderful skills with your dogs and always set a good example. I know it’s been a while since I have seen you but still think of you often. Sending my deepest condolences.

Gillian and family

My deepest sympathies on the loss of your father and grandfather. Your stories of him made him sound like a wonderful father and I know he will be deeply missed. It also sounds as if he passed on many of his best traits to you, resulting in your own dedication to your family, your friends, and to your work. May you find peace and comfort in the remembrance of a life well-lived.
