Horne, Daniel "Dan" Russell

HORNE, Daniel "Dan" Russell

1953 - 2022

Daniel R. Horne passed away on the afternoon of September 10, 2022, after what feels like both a very long and very short journey with dementia. Dan spent his last days listening to classic rock with visits from many family members.

Since the fall of 2020, Dan was lovingly cared for by the amazing staff at Teck Pioneer Residence in Kirkland Lake. It was a difficult time to be admitted into Long Term Care, but they did the best they could in accommodating all our family members many visits.

When we think about Dan, everyone agrees on what comes to mind: first is the mustache and of course, aviator sunglasses, a blue jays baseball hat, a cigar, and double denim.

Dan was born on November 21, 1953 in Sudbury to Don and Pat Horne. He graduated from Laurentian University with a bachelors of Social Work, and he worked in Child Protection Services for 35 years. Dan and Cathie lived in Sudbury, Oakville, and Kirkland Lake. Dan is pre-deceased by older brother John (1953) and father Don (1999). He is survived by mother Patricia, and brothers Eric (Yvonne), Ron (Barb), and Jason. Every story his brothers could tell about him will involve camping, hunting, beer, and baseball. Dan will be sorely missed by his wife Cathie, daughters Jessica (Jessy) and Kelsey (Scott), grandchildren Lydia and Henley, and very close family members from all the Thomas, Boal, and Horne clans.

We will remember him dancing to the Dixie Chicks in Toronto with Cathie, Jess and Kelsey, reading the Toronto Star with Lydia in his lap, taking care of every camp fire we ever had, and being the world’s best and loudest stubby judge at the family Texas Horseshoe tournaments.

In keeping with Dan's wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will receive guests at the Timiskaming Funeral Cooperative - French Family Chapel (111 Burnside Drive, Kirkland Lake) on Thursday, September 15th, 2022 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and a memorial service will follow at 12 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Teck Pioneer Residence.

Donations can only be made by Cheque and must be payable to Teck Pioneer Residence

Cathie and family

My condolences to Dan’s family.
I had the pleasure of working with Dan at the Englehart office. I loved that he was always calm and never got worked up. I do remember that he always went to watch the first Blue Jays game. I remember the sun glasses and the smell of his cigar. RIP Dan

Cathie and Family

We are feeling sad and very sorry to hear of Dan’s passing. Dan was a pillar of the Englehart office with his old port cigars. We will always remember Dan for his favourite sayings; “sounds like a plan”, “keep your stick on the ice”, “put your ducks in a row”, and another coined saying “keep your shinny side up”.
He was a mentor to many, Dan was a classic.
Our deepest sympathies

We were saddened to learn of Dan’s passing. Dan was an outstanding Northerner and a friend. His work ethic was an example to all who knew him and his objective approach was appreciated by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. To everyone who loved Dan

I remember working with Dan during my Wraparound position at CAS and I will never forget his presence. It was like everything was calmer when he was there, like a truly lighter energy, that had strength. My candle is lit and I wish for you all good memories in having known him.
