Lotte's family
It is with great sadness that I learned of Lotte's passing. (Thank you for the phone call, Helen.) Lotte was a good and dear friend. I will miss her very, very much and I will always remember her.
Charlotte Orton
1925-2023
ORTON, Charlotte, "Lotte" (Mittler), age 98, passed away peacefully at Bruyère Hospital on the morning of Thursday, May 11th, 2023. She’ll be dearly missed by her daughters Carol (Nick) and Helen (Joe), grandchildren Natalie, Jenny, Simon, and Sophie, great-grandchildren Ewen and Audrey, and goddaughter Liz. She'll also be greatly missed by Dan, Ryan, Ashley, Brendon, and countless friends and extended family.
Lotte exuded kindness, love, and generosity both towards her family and her community, where she built and nurtured friendships well into her nineties. She was a true extrovert, beaming energy through her warm smile, hearty laugh, and ever-endearing Austrian-British accent.
She was born with her twin sister, Ruth Engelhart, in Vienna, Austria, on March 3, 1925. At the age of 13, they fled to England via the Kindertransport as WWII began. There, she took care of young children in a wartime nursery and fell in love with her husband, Irving “Terry” Edward Orton (1910-1991). Together they immigrated to Montreal, Canada, and then settled in Ottawa, calling it home for the rest of their lives.
Lotte was an excellent host, whether it was a 1960s dinner party, a backyard wedding reception, or one of countless family gatherings that always included a warm meal, gregarious conversation, and plenty of laughter. She was also an avid traveller, seeing much of Europe and many other exciting destinations throughout her life.
She’s best remembered surrounded by family because she was, by nature, dedicated to them. She likely reached the age of 98 with her wits about her because she was a curious, generous, and social human being. Her life revolved around family and she helped everyone who needed it - she was there for all of us. She will be dearly missed.
Many thanks to all the friends and caregivers who were there for Lotte in her time of need.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations in Lotte’s honour to the charity of your choice.
A celebration of her life will be held on Friday June 23, 2023 at 1pm at Emmanuel United Church, 691 Smyth Road, in Ottawa.
