Marjorie and all the family
So sorry to hear of Bill's passing. I always enjoyed our talks when we met as I walked my dog around our Pierrefonds neighbourhood.
Lydia Houghton
William (Bill) Edwin Lawton (July 6, 1929 to December 11, 2023) aged 94
Bill was born in Verdun, Quebec in 1929 to William Stuart Lawton and Hilda Beatrice Jeffries. He enjoyed many summers at the cottage in Dunany, Quebec and many winters in Panama City Beach, Florida during his retirement. Dad was a Boy Scout and spent summers at Camp Tamaracouta and in later years worked there as a staff member. He had funny fishing/hunting stories to tell and enjoyed the outdoors. Bill worked for CN and later Northern Electric at the cable plant in Lachine, Quebec where he had great camaraderie with many coworkers.
Bill met the love of his life, Marjorie Craig in 1952 while skating on a double date with Bob and Norma High. They were apart for some time as mum worked as a nurse in Bermuda and Dad travelled to chaperone his sister as she married and then moved to Bogota, Columbia. Excited to start their new lives together, Bill and Marge were married in 1959 in Howick, Quebec.
Bill and Marge couldn’t wait to start a family of their own, and Anne was born in 1962 and David in 1964.
Though he loved spending time at the cottage, Bill's favorite role was that of grandparent. He treasured his time with the grandkids and loved being Grandpa to Christopher, Jennifer and Matthew. Dad built a small red Volkswagen car out of wood and parts from his old VW Rabbit for Christopher that he loved!
Dad would always feed the birds at home and at the cottage. As a result he also ended up feeding many squirrels and chipmunks as well. Bill and Marge often looked after Dave and Sabrina’s dog Rupert who always enjoyed walking with Bill as he took daily walks for many years. Before work Bill would run around the track at Riverdale High School or swim laps at Briarwood Pool.
Bill was an active member and church elder of St. Genevieve United Church, and enjoyed the many events the church planned for the congregation. He was involved with Boy Scouts as treasurer of the executive committee, and was a founding member of an affordable housing project for seniors in the West Island of Montreal.
Bill was handy around the house, had an extensive collection of tools in his workshop and knew how to fix a car. Dave used to sit in the hood of the car and observe as Dad worked away.
Bill will always be remembered for his laugh and he always enjoyed a funny story or joke. He enjoyed visiting family in Howick and the kidding around that would always take place. Our family couldn’t have asked for a better husband and father, and we will miss Dad every day. Bill’s memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him. He was generous and fair, and had a soft spot for children. He loved to hear kids laughing and having a good time up at the lake.
Bill is survived by wife Marjorie, his children Anne (Pierre) and grandchildren Christopher and Jennifer and his son David (Sabrina) and grandson Matthew.
Funeral Service will take place at 1:30 pm on Saturday, December 16th at the Cass Funeral Home in Lennoxville, Quebec. Donations to the Grace Village Care Foundation www.gracevillage.ca/donations would be greatly appreciated. In lieu of flowers please commit a random act of kindness with Bill in mind.
