Knebel, Richard Arthur

KNEBEL, Richard Arthur

1989 - 2022

Richard Arthur Knebel (formerly Leyland), age 33, loving husband to his wife, Stefanie Knebel, passed away unexpectedly on August 13th, 2022, in Ottawa, Ontario. He was born on March 21st, 1989, in New Westminster BC and attended Simon Fraser University for his undergraduate degree, the University of Cambridge for his Masters, and Queen's University for his PhD in mathematics. He worked for Communications Security Establishment as a Cryptographer.

Richard was a brilliant mathematician. He could work with something new and learn it faster than anyone I ever met. He loved his wife very much and reminded her with little love notes each morning before he left for work. He was an artist at heart, and he could often be found playing his guitar and singing, always carrying guitar picks in his pocket. He loved going on car rides and his wife and him would go on many adventures. They travelled around Europe, Ireland, across Canada, and parts of the U.S. He was very much loved by his wife and will be greatly missed.

He also leaves behind his parents, Edna and Ramish Leyland, his sister, Nicole Hall (Connor Hall) and his beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A short celebration of his life will be held at a later date in Kingston, Ontario and another across Canada in British Columbia. Please contact Peter Taylor or Stefanie Knebel for further information.

Steffanie

My condolences Steff on your loss.

Far too young to lose someone with such a promising future.

Take care of yourself.

One of my dearest friends, too many kind things to say of Richard. Kind, helpful, inquisitive, witty, goofy, and always eagerly willing to entertain the most absurd ideas. Perhaps one of the longest conversations I recall having with him involved an exploration into the feasibility of making a fire extinguisher out of chocolate. Absurd? Absolutely. Impractical? Unquestionably. But by no means pointless. I've an accumulation of years of cherished memories like this and more, and it pains me to know there won't be any more to come.

My deepest sympathies go out to Stefanie who shared with him what I'm sure were some of the best years of his life. And thank you for the happiness you brought to an incomparable friend.

Very sorry to hear about Richard's passing. As his uncle I was able to observe his development from birth through to the present. I was impressed with his personal growth as he fearlessly tackled (and solved) the many challenges he faced during his studies. Earning a PhD in Mathematics provided him with a strong foundation for a long and rewarding career. His passing occurred much too prematurely, especially with such a bright future ahead of him. Meeting you and marrying you was one of his great joys.

Please accept my deepest sympathies as you work your way through this tragedy. Thank you for being such a significant part of his life.

Thanks, Stefanie, for those heartfelt words. Such a tragic loss—most certainly to you, and to the whole Queen’s community and beyond. He was so good at what he did, creative in his own way, and very much his own man. Courage.

Cousin, you were an incredibly special person who will be missed by many.

In my heart, you will forever be linked with our grandparent's farm, the many family adventures in Coquitlam, BC, your love for Thomas the Train, and the wedding shenanigans we engaged in! You were charismatic, adventurous, and highly entertaining. You may be gone, but never forgotten. Salud!

Wishing all who loved and knew him comfort and peace to face the days ahead and loving memories to hold in your heart.

I am deeply sorry for your loss. During my graduate studies at Queen's, I frequently ran into Richard at the grad library and at lunch with the other students. As a first year student, I greatly appreciated that he took the time to chat with me and ask how I was doing with my research and courses. Richard was very knowledgable, and I specifically remember the time when he very patiently explained to me how number theory was used in cryptography, as well as a very nice talk he gave at the student seminar on differential forms. My most heartfelt condolences to you during this time.
