Oliver Toope
1929-2024
Oliver Toope grew up in Ireland’s Eye, an island in Trinity Bay, Newfoundland He married his best friend Charlotte (Halliburton) in 1958. Oliver was a self professed “Jack of all trades but master of none.” His many roles included dreamer, fisherman, galley cook, bread maker, moonshine brewer, carpenter, actor, Lay Reader, and, eventually, a teacher, administrator, and father. He taught in both Newfoundland and Labrador, and was a Department Head at the College of Trades and Technology (later renamed College of the North Atlantic) in St. John’s.
The final trade that Oliver turned his hand to was writer. This spring he completed his memoir, What I See When I Close My Eyes. On August 20th his children, Michael and Leslie, and his grandson Noah, will be hosting a celebration of Oliver’s book and his life, in St. John’s.
