LÉVESQUE, Monique

1950 - 2022

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mom, grandmaman, sister, aunt, and friend.

After almost a decade of hope and determination, Monique succumbed to cancer on October 27, 2022, at the Maison Mathieu-Froment-Savoie in Hull—where she was a volunteer and caregiver for almost 20 years, formerly the very church where she was baptised, and just up the street from her childhood home.

Monique is survived and deeply mourned by her children Tanya Dare, Jessica Dare (Jonathan Monaghan), Yolanda Dare, and Gareth Dare (Colleen Mabon); her grandchildren Ivan (Sarah), Ferguson, and Gwendolyn; her siblings Jean-Pierre, Michel (Lynne), Marthe (Jacques), Jacques, Guy (Sylvie), and Lyne (Guy); many cousins, nieces, nephews, and godchildren; and a strong community of friends, neighbours, caregivers, and music-lovers. Predeceased by her cherished love Bob Tessier, darling brother Claude, and dear parents Marcelle Allain and Jean-Paul Lévesque.

In the words of her young grandson, Monique was “a very caring person who had a lot of friends and took care of her family. She was really nice and a wonderful person.” She had a deeply ingrained, innate ability to care for—and take care of—others, bringing them comfort when they most needed it. Monique loved the water and spent the last 20 years living on the banks of the Ottawa River, where she swam, kayaked, skated, or just sat and enjoyed the sunset. Many people benefited from her prolific vegetable gardens and beautiful flower gardens. We all know how much she loved music, especially the blues, and she had a devoted group of friends who attended countless music festivals, concerts, and shows with her over the years.

Monique was a driving force of healing and laughter in her community. She was always there to lend an ear, and she helped countless souls navigate their struggles. And though she took on others’ pain, she refused to let it keep her from sharing her beautiful smile.

Monique’s children and grandchildren were lucky enough to be loved wholly and unconditionally by this amazing woman. She was devoted to her family, from being a full-time mom to being very involved in raising her grandkids. Her whole-hearted caring for her loved ones meant that she had a huge community of family, friends, and neighbours who were only too happy to help and support her in various ways so that she could live her best life in the house she loved for as long as possible. Special friends Jackie, Jo-Anne, Michael, Paul, Erik, Louise, Guy and Denise, Lynn, Martial and Louise, Réjean and Chantal, and Annette were only too happy to join her in various adventures and lend her a hand when she most needed it. Long-time long-distance friends Diane and Marie have been there through it all too. Mom had a talent for creating community wherever she was. Please forgive us if we have missed anyone who should be mentioned.

All are welcome at a celebration of her life and love of dancing to the blues at the Rainbow Bistro in Ottawa on Sunday, November 6—her birthday—starting at 5:30 p.m. All are also welcome at the interment of her remains, with a New Orleans-style procession and music, at Notre-Dame Cemetery in Gatineau (Boul. Fournier) on Saturday, November 12 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the foundation Maison Mathieu Froment-Savoie, Leucan, or the Gatineau Hospital Cancer Centre would be appreciated. We are particularly grateful for the exceptional care she received at the Maison Mathieu Froment-Savoie, a place that meant so much to her.

Bonne nuit, bons rêves, Mom.

La famille Levesque et Dare

It is with immense pain that we send you our deepest sympathies. Monique had such a big personality always happy and loved everyone. Her laughter was very infectious with the best smile. I've appreciated every moment with her no matter how small it might have been. She certainly made the sun shine a bit brighter on everyone that crossed our path every day. You will be missed greatly Monique. Please give your mom a big hug for me!

The Dare and Lévesque Families

Such a beautiful tribute to a very special lady who touched the lives of, and was loved by so many. Monique's radiant smile and strength of character and mind was an inspiration to us all. My sincere condolences to all those who loved her so deeply. May you rest in peace and love dearest Monique.
“She’s in the sun, the wind, the rain, she’s in the air you breathe with every breath you take. She sings a song of hope and cheer, there’s no more pain, no more fear. You’ll see her in the clouds above, hear her whisper words of love, you’ll be together before long, until then. listen for her song." -Author Unknown

What a fitting tribute that describes her perfectly. She was a fighter and never gave up. She always made the best of her situation.
I will miss our long phone conversations. Tu vas vraiment me manquer chère Monique.

Monique’s loving family

There are no words that can do justice to how much Monique meant to me over the last many years. I think of our amazing road trip to Newfoundland, the best trip of my life! Of the Thanksgiving that we shared one year with her daughter Tanya when we took a trip to St. Catherine’s, of our many swims in the Ottawa River and our endless games of scrabble on her front porch ( she was a great scrabble player and in both French and English! ) of the way her face would light up when her grandkids would come to visit her, of our wild motorbike track on the back roads of Mexico so we could go swimming in a cenote! And so much more
But the greatest bond between us was our mutual love of music. The pleasure and fun we had in each other’s company! Sadly and a heartbreak for me, I was at home in Toronto and was not able to say goodbye to her in person when she died. But it was only this past August, late in August, that we made a pact to get to another festival. It was on her bucket list. We had gone to the limestone blues Festival in Kingston several times before and we both loved it there. We usually stayed at my brothers but his wife had not been well (and died shortly before Monique) we left getting a hotel room too last minute as Monique’s strength and health was fragile. Her pain levels were becoming increasingly cruel. As anyone who knew her will tell you, her determination was ferocious. It was beginning to feel like an impossible goal went to longtime friends of my brothers family and Coke creators of The Kingston blues society ;Susan and Frank and Warnica offered to have a stay in their home. They were simply wowed by Moniques courage and desire to attend the festival and they wanted to help make that happen.

It was hard for Monique. She had been struggling with this beast called cancer for nearly a decade ; had one many a battle but was beginning to lose the war. She was not sleeping well, the pain in the morning was especially bad. Frank and susan‘s kindness saved the day. They surrounded Monique with loving care. They instinctively understood how precious this time was, for all of us. By noon, Monique would rally. We made it there every day and to every show. We even got up to dance once with me staunchly by her side. At the end of the festival, we looked at each other. Embraced. And shouted “ we did it, we did it!!”!!!
I did not get to say goodbye to Monique but no matter. She is forever with me, in my heart. In my musical soul. I am still sad and probably will be four, who knows how long? But my gratitude for the time I did have with Monique as her gift to me. Not just me I think ; But to all those who knew her and loved her. May her spirit rest always with us.

Maurice Corriveau
