MARTIN, Michael

1952 - 2023

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. Michael (Michel, Mike, Pit) Martin on December 21, 2023, at the age of 71. He was the son of the late Guy Martin and the late Irène Auger. He is survived by his brothers Gerald and Richard (Brigitte); his sisters Julie (Bruce) and Jocelyne (Lori) as well as his nieces Gina, Victoria, Élizabeth, Victoire and Leïla, many relatives and friends and especially his caregiver Reynald Perrault. He was predeceased by his wife Lilian Marlow.

Mike (Pit to his longtime friends) was known for his zest for life and his love of jazz, singing, football, baseball, politics and, above all, good food. He enjoyed sharing hearty meals at Chinese or Indian restaurants with family and friends. He worked for many years as a freelance journalist, writing hundreds of articles. Despite his illness lasting more than 30 years, he became a historian and wrote two books on working-class life in Hull as well as his magnum opus, City of the Sun: Development and Popular Resistance in the Pre-Modern West, published in 2017.

A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, January 28, 2024 at 2 pm at the COOPÉRATIVE FUNÉRAIRE DE L'OUTAOUAIS located at 95 Boulevard de la Cité-des-Jeunes in Gatineau (Hull sector). The family will receive condolences starting at 1:30 pm. You will be able to watch the ceremony live or in replay via the https://commemora.tv/fr/diffusions/83919

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Kidney Foundation of Canada would be appreciated.

The family would like to thank the staff of the intensive care unit and the 7th floor of the CSSS Pavillon de Hull for the good care provided.

Messages of condolence can be sent via the www.cfo.coop.

Family of Michael Martin

To all of Michael's family & friends I offer my sincere condolences on his passing.
I will miss him too. He was a good friend. Over the years, we had many good discussions on politics, music, sports. Michael, his brother Richard & I made a tradition of taking in a ball game once a summer - an event which I looked forward to every year.
One thing that I will always remember was his joking reference to himself & I as twins (because my last name is Martin too). That was really funny because, physically, he & I couldn't be more different.
RIP my friend.

Michel (Pit) Martin

In loving memory of our dear friend and ULU brother, ‘Pit’ Martin. We still can hear your signature laugh and enduring dark humour. Our adult children fondly remember their Uncle Pit attending the weddings and celebrating the births of our grandchildren. You truly were a man outstanding in his field! (Smile & hugs) xxoo Erik&Dean

Ciao Michel Martin!

Richard Martin

I first met Pit our first year at Laurentian. Many great memories and laughs. ULU reunions, our trip to Winnipeg to be in The Brute’s wedding party (Pit’s only golf game with me and Brute’s father-in-law), too much time spent in the UC pub, the Christmas Eve he got me drunk on caribou in Hammond…Had a great talk with him just days before he left us. His will to live was incredible. RIP Pit.
