It’s with broken hearts that we announce that on November 22, 2022, our beautiful mother, Maria Carmelia Coelho (nee Vultao), passed away peacefully at the Gatineau Hospital at the age of 85, surrounded by her children, grandchildren and loved family members.
She was the beloved wife of the late Duarte Manuel Martins Coelho, the daughter of the late Jose de Viveiros Vultao and the late Maria de Nazareth Viveiros Cabeçeiras, a very cherished mother to Jeremias (Otilia), Artur (Helena), Isabel (Joao), Bertha (Mario Jorge), Dolores (Carlos), Paula (Johanne) and Roberto (Martine). She was the loving grandmother to Andrea Bobbi, Anthony, Christopher, Cindy, Claudia, David, Jason, Jeremy, John, John Winston, Leslie, Mark Anthony, Matthew, Nicholas, Richard, and Sabrina, a loving step-grandmother to Daisy and Danny, and a loving great-grandmother to Adrian, Aiden, Aimee, Austin Bryan, Brayden, Jakob, Luka, and Monika. She leaves her sisters Natalia Ferreira and Lurdes Andrade and her brother Carlos Alberto Vultao. Predeceased by her brothers Jose and Alfredo and her sister Maria Rosa. She is also survived by her cousins, her nieces, her nephews, as well as many other family and friends.
Mom immigrated to Canada on August 7, 1962 from her homeland, Açores at the ripe age of 24, married with two children, to join our dad and to start a new life in Canada. At that young age equipped with only her native language and wit, she quickly found her way around in Hull, Quebec picking up on the Canadian customs and the languages. With this new knowledge she soon began to help other immigrating families and friends settling in the community. She volunteered many years at her parish. Mom’s greatest love was her family and she dedicated her long life to raising seven children and caring for our paternal grandparents and our maternal grandmother and her grandchildren. She became widowed at the young age of 43 and continued to be the strong remarkable woman we knew raising her large family on her own. She was an exceptional woman, wife and mother. Over the years she was blessed with keeping and nurturing big beautiful, loving and caring friendships with families and friends. She cared deeply for her family and neighbors. She always had words of encouragement for young people. She did all this not out of obligation, but because of who she was. She was a central figure in our lives: she was a star in our eyes. In her spare time, we would find Mom tucked away in the garden among her other greatest passion and love for all things plants and flowers. She will be dearly missed.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, the Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus, the Montfort Hospital, and the Gatineau Hospital for their excellent care and support. Also, many thanks to the pharmacists and staff at Proxim Jonathan Banville, Steven Haddad & Patrick Lamarche (Gatineau) for their exceptional services.
