Józef “Ziuk” NOWOSIELSKI
Józef Więczysław Nowosielski, beloved husband, father, grandfather, died in the evening of October 2nd, 2023. Tatuś was born on May 16th, 1935, to Zofia and Eugeniusz Nowosielski in Równe, then interwar Poland. He was predeceased by his brother, Dariusz; and is survived by his wife Maryna and sons Danek (France) and Leszek (Genevieve) as well as his grandchildren Audrey, Jessica, Erik, Emil and Zofia.
Ziuk escaped with his parents and brother via the Baltics, Sweden and Norway to England in the days immediately following the outbreak of World War 2. He lived through the Blitz in England attending Ladyhouse School and later Cambridge University (B.Sc, M.Sc). He moved to the United States to attend Cornell University for his PhD studies in Zoology. During his studies at Cornell, he met his wife Maryna (Kozubal) on a visit to Boston, marrying in 1964.
After a visit to Montreal, Ziuk and Maryna immigrated to Canada where they would start a family. Jozef worked at both Sir George Williams University and McGill Universities before moving to Ottawa in 1977 and shifting careers to work as a translator of multiple Slavic languages to English and stay at home to raise his two sons. Ziuk was a fixture at fencing competitions throughout his sons’ fencing careers, helping organize competitions, billeting athletes from around the world and travelling to competitions across Canada.
Tatuś led an exemplary life; a loving husband to Maryna, to whom he was married for 59 years. Together, they enjoyed their family especially their grandchildren, the outdoors and global travel throughout their lives together. As a father, he encouraged his sons to be curious, to pursue their passions, to be active and enjoy the outdoors, to be kind to others and to go out and explore the world. He was always willing to welcome guests and visitors to the family home.
Funeral service will be held at Canadian Martyrs Roman Catholic Church, 100 Main Street, Ottawa, Ontario on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at 11:30 a.m., with a reception to follow. A private burial for family members only will take place that afternoon at Beechwood Cemetery
