BOERSEN, Johannes (John) Simon

1932 - 2024

In Loving Memory of Johannes (John) Simon Boersen

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father, John Boersen, the morning of Friday, April 12th, 2024, at the young age of 91.

Born in the rural Netherlands on October 30th, 1932, John was the eldest in a family of 13 children living on a farm just outside the village of Achterveld.

John experienced World War II as a young boy and his childhood was soon to be shattered as they lived in occupied territory under German Rule.

After 6 long years of War, his family farm and village would be liberated by Elements of the Canadian Armed Forces (PPCLI), thus, his love for Canada was born.

In 1952, John was drafted into the Royal Dutch Armed Forces, where he was selected to train to become an elite member of the commando unit.  He succeeded and earned his green beret.  Although he never served active duty, the day the dikes along the Dutch coast collapsed in February 1953, he was there helping to save people during that stormy night.

In March of 1956, John married Wilhemina (Margaret) Verhoef.  Newly married, they immigrated to Canada. They started their Canadian life in Knowlton, Quebec, and eventually, in 1962, settled in the township of Melbourne, Quebec, to live their dream of owning and operating a dairy farm. Together, over the next 31 years, they built Glynthstages Farm and raised their 5 children.

John fully adopting his Canadian life, learning two new languages and a new culture, became very involved in his community through various organizations and committees. He became involved in the PTA, Quebec Farmer’s Association, Representative of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture, UPA, Milk Federation, Richmond Agricultural Society, Fence Inspector in the Melbourne Municipality, and he was frequently called upon by various media outlets to give his opinion on agricultural related topics.

After the passing of his beloved wife Margaret in 1993, John found companionship again with Wilhemina (Wil) Veugen.  They married in 1996 and resided in Kitchener, Ontario, over the next 25 years.

John once again, adopted his new surroundings and became very involved in his new community. John loved to sing and became a member of the choir at his local church. He also joined the Kitchener Regional Police Choir, of which he was very proud, touring with them at local venues and on many occasions on Parliament Hill in Ottawa for the commemoration ceremonies for the fallen police officers. He also volunteered his time at the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul in Kitchener-Waterloo.  During John’s time in Kitchener, he realized a lifelong dream of getting his pilot’s licence for a single-engine aircraft.

John was very passionate about History, particularly the events of World War II. He put pen to paper and wrote numerous short stories about his days growing up in the village of Achterveld during the war.  Those stories were eventually compiled and published in a book titled; The Beginning of the End: Memories of WW II.

When Wil passed away in 2022, John moved back to Quebec, where he resided at the Wales Home in Richmond, until his passing.

John was truly one of a kind. He was a loving husband, father, Opa, Great-Opa, brother, Uncle, cousin, and friend to many.

He is predeceased by his late daughter Ann, and will be greatly missed by his children, Peter (Karen), Betty-Jean (James), Philip (Colleen), Paul (Julie) and son-in law Gerald. He will be fondly remembered as Opa to Lisa, Lori-Jean, Patricia, Michael, Sean, Tyler, Chloe, Amanda, Andrew, Skyler and Ameeka, and great-Opa to Joshua, Sophia, Nicolas, Adrian, Charlotte, Madelaine, Elizabeth, Lexi, Lea, Hailey, Mila, Kali, Alessia, Julianna, Jack and Ivy.

He leaves behind his siblings Simon (Lia), Theo, Ton (Rietje), Leo (Johanna), Gerbrand (Ans), Hans (Vera), Maria (Henk), Marius (Annette), sister-in-law Truus and is predeceased by Dora, Anton, Johan and Karine.

He also leaves to mourn many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends in Canada and The Netherlands.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 20th, 2024, at 10:45 am at St. Bibiane’s Church, 970 rue Principale Nord, Richmond (Quebec). Burial to follow in the St.Bibiane's Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at the CASS Funeral Home, 295, rue Principale Sud, Richmond (Quebec) Friday, April 19th, 2024, from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm and Saturday, April 20th, 2024, from 8:30 am to 10:15 am.

John Boersen

Ome Jan was een breed ontwikkelde man met interessante gesprekken over o.a. politiek.

What a beautiful tribute you wrote for your father, opa and great-opa! To me, Jan was like a grand-father when I was young, my own grand-parents being so far away in Holland. He was always so nice, always smiling, and I was impressed by how big his hands were!
I feel for you all, my sympathies xx

Peter and Philip

I only saw your father once or twice when I was in grade school at St-Michael’s. The thing I remember most is he had a great big smile and a ‘joie de vivre’ that was larger than life. I wish to express to the both of you and to all your family my heartfelt condolences.

The Boersen Family

My memories of John and Margaret are from the years between Knowlton and Melbourne. They lived on the Maynes farm in "Skiberine" where Ann and Peter called my Dad "Opa". John was a great worker and always showed interest in the farm. I am so happy that Doug and I were able to visit John last summer at the Wales Home. His face lit up as we chatted about "the good old days".
John was a man of great inspiration to others.
Our sincere sympathy to all the family.

Family of John

On behalf of the Sangers family, we offer our sincere condolences. My parents, John and Rina Sangers became good friends with John and Wil and spent a lot of time together in church, playing cards, and even travelling together to New York City and other bus trips. John’s tractor was stored at our home farm in Ayr where he could visit it on his trips out to Ayr.
John was always such a kind and interesting man and we always enjoyed seeing him when he was visiting with our parents.
We offer our condolences and hope you take comfort knowing he lived such a full life.
