Joan was born to the Honorable George and Mary (Walker) Hemingway on January 9,1922 in Wakefield, Yorkshire, England and passed away on May 3, 2012 in North Hatley, Quebec, Canada. Educated in England Joan was an active member of her political family. Joining the Woman’s Auxiliary Air Force during WWII, Joan worked in telecommunications and was stationed at Holme on Spalding Moore. It was there that she met and married her beloved husband of 65 years, Flight Lieutenant Malcolm (Mac) W. MacDonald, DFC, a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force. In 1946, as a war bride, Joan traveled to Canada on the post war Queen Mary with her infant son John. Published in numerous magazines and newspapers, Joan was an accomplished freelance writer. She authored and published three books, The Stanstead College Story, The Owls Cry, and most recently, in 2002, Our Mornings May Never Be. After raising her three children, Joan entered a career as Development Officer for Stanstead College - a position she held and enjoyed until her retirement. Eternally creative, Joan was a voracious reader, loved working in her English garden, oil painting, music, the theater and travel. She enjoyed wonderful friendships and was a great friend to all who knew her. Joan was exceptional in giving to her community. She served with the Stanstead Historical Society, as President of the North Country Hospital Woman’s Auxiliary, Border Curling Club and Rotary International where she worked and traveled along side Mac when he was District Governor. Closest to her heart, was Joan’s family. As a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and aunt she gave of herself lovingly and tirelessly. She is survived by her children, John MacDonald and his wife Lise of Swanton, VT; Heather MacDonald Greene and her Husband Douglas of Rancho Mirage, CA; and Keith MacDonald of Phoenix, AZ; her grandchildren, Katie MacDonald and Derek MacDonald both of South Burlington, VT, as well as many nieces and nephews.
