Thinking of you ALL at this very difficult time. Doesn't matter how Old a person is, IT's still SAD. Lots of memories to remember her by. So sorry for your loss.
May my support
warm your heart
On Sunday December 8th Ingrid Aru’s 100-year journey ended at the Teck Pioneer Residence in Kirkland Lake. Ingrid was predeceased by her husband Evald and her son-in-law Alexander (Sandy) Andrew.
She leaves behind her loving daughters Linda Andrew and Tiina (Steve) Bailey. Grandmother (“Ema”) to Vanessa, Landon (Sheri nee Piche), Amy Clarke (Eric) and Cameron and great grandmother to Kalev, Kristjan, Andren, Robert and Rose. Her heart warmed with joy because of their existence.
Escaping Estonia during Russian occupancy (post-war), Ingrid spent some time in a DP camp and then relocated to Belgium, where she was hired to work for a wealthy family in Brussels. The time with the Legrande family became one of the highlights in her life and she developed a close relationship with them. Also, in Brussels, Ingrid met and married her lifelong love, Evald Aru. In September 1950, along with their 5-month-old daughter Tiina, they endured a stormy 2-week voyage across the Atlantic, arriving in Quebec City. Northern Ontario became their home, first in Renabie and then in Kirkland Lake although her heart always remained in Estonia. She reminisced frequently of their two trips back to their homeland to visit family once Estonia liberated.
Ingrid was strong-willed and determined, traits that preserved her throughout her long life... (and also created challenges for her daughters). She was a great story teller, funny and colourful; words on paper had the same flair. Her passion for cooking and baking served her family, friends and the Estonian community well. Multicultural festivals, in the mid 70's benefited from her delicious pirukad and sai (braided cardamon bread). Estonian parties, Christmas Eve and Easter celebrations always were delicious, and neighbours over the years were delighted recipients of her baking. One of her other talents was her prolific ability at knitting mittens and hats; over the years donations of dozens of handknit mitts and hats were made to the Salvation Army, Finnish craft sales, and newborns at the Timmins hospital. Her love to dance continued into her final weeks... and finally, she gave wonderful hugs.
A special thank-you to all the staff at Teck Pioneer Residence for their care and loving patience with Ingrid during her final eight years. A private family celebration will be held at a later date.
