LAING, Hugh

1942 - 2024

In Loving Memory of

Hugh Laing

Hugh Laing, Jr., was born November 03, 1942 and passed away on November 24, 2024 at the age of 82. He is survived by his wife, Linda and daughter Teena, siblings; Carol (Ivano) and David (Sandra) and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by Hugh Laing Sr.,(father) and Ella Laing, (mother), Nancy (sister) and Lorry Laing (daughter).

Hugh’s career spanned several decades. He worked at CHOV in Pembroke, CKCO in   Kitchener and CJOH in Ottawa, Ottawa School Board, Ternnel, Owner of RPT and VCR Repair/Capital Promotions with Ted Cooper and Frank Steel (they ran Trains Shows together). In 1987, he opened The Christmas Train Store which was his lifelong passion. The business became a defining part of his later years where he was delighted in repairing trains and sharing his enthusiasm with customers and friends.

Though not an adventurer by nature. Hugh enjoyed travelling with Linda to England, Rio, Mexico, Hawaii, Holland, Las Vegas and more. At home Hugh found contentment in his workshop and train room.

Hugh is remembered as a man who lived life on his terms, finding satisfaction in the simple pleasures of his hobbies and work.

This is a letter I received from a customer (D.J.Laundry) that really described Hugh:

“Hugh was truly a one-of-a-kind and a memorable character. I’ll always remember his sharp wit and his straightforward, no-nonsense approach. Hugh had such a genuine passion for what he loved, his trains and his store. His Christmas Train Store wasn’t just a treasure in Ottawa, it was a reflection of him, a place infused with his personality, charm and the magic he created. I visited his store every November, starting back in 2007. After moving to Halifax, Nova Scotia, I made sure to send people in to see him, bring back track and other pieces for me. Almost everything I have in my collection came from Hugh and Linda. I will truly miss him.”

There will be a Celebration of Life at their home on May 31st, 2025. From 12pm to 4pm. If you are interested in attending please email vcrtrains@gmail.com for details.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to a charity of your choice.

Rest in peace my Love
