MARTIN, Heidi

1938 - 2025

Heidi Martin
(1938 - 2025)

Died suddenly at St. Patrick’s Home in Ottawa on February 19, 2025. Heidi immigrated to Canada from Germany in the 1950’s with her parents and her brother, Klaus, settling in Corner Brook, Newfoundland. Following her graduation from Dalhousie University, Heidi married Leonard. They raised their family in Corner Brook and lived there until the children were grown. Although she and Leonard lived in Ottawa for many years, Heidi considered Newfoundland her home and missed it and her Newfoundland friends a great deal.

A lover of animals and an ardent volunteer, Heidi found joy in combining her two passions when she worked with the SPCA in Corner Brook, and in Ottawa, with the Greenbelt Riding Association for the Disabled (GRAD, now TROtt). Other notable volunteer positions include those with the University Women’s Club, the Corner Brook Ski Club, the Consumers Association, Skate Canada, the Ottawa Children’s Museum, and most recently at St. Patrick’s Home. There are no doubt many more.

Heidi was predeceased by her parents and her husband Leonard. She is survived by her brother and his spouse, her three children and their spouses, five grandchildren and soon to be born, a great grandchild, as well as her dear friend and fiancé, Don.

A celebration of Heidi’s life will be held at
St. Patrick’s Home of Ottawa (2865 Riverside Drive)
on Saturday, March 29, 2025 at 10:30 am.

Deep and heartfelt thanks to the staff and administrators at St. Patrick’s Home who cared for Heidi for almost nine years and who encouraged and supported Heidi with her many volunteer positions at the Home. Special thanks to Evelyn, who worked with Heidi over eighteen years, and Mileth, who worked with Heidi for the past three years - both of whom shared their wonderful families with Heidi and treated her with kindness, love and respect.

Cremation has occurred.

Krista and all of Heidi’s dear family and friends

My deepest condolences to you all of you on the passing of Heidi, such a lovely person. I have very fond memories of her, dating back to my youth during our summer visits in Corner Brook, and more recently when she and Leonard came to Tucson, and when we visited in Ottawa.

She was a special, gentle woman, and her affection for animals was renowned. I wish you all peace, and happy memories of your times together.

Martin Family

My heartfelt condolences to the Martin family. I was deeply saddened by the news of Heidi’s passing.

The eighteen years I spent caring for Heidi were full of fond memories that I will cherish in my heart. She was such a beautiful person inside and out, a kind and loving soul.

I am grateful to Heidi, Martin and their children for treating me like family and even extended their love and kindness to my own family.

From the Philippines, my family and I send our love and prayers to the bereaved family during this moment of sadness. We wish you nothing but comfort and strength.

Rest in God’s eternal peace dear Heidi.

Heidi's children

Heidi was a friend and neighbour at her horse Cinnamon's barn in Humber Village. We had many cups of hot chocolate and treats in the loft sitting area and warm and endearing conversations. We stayed in touch after she moved . She was a special friend and I wish her Godspeed into the next realm.

Krista and Family

Our sympathy to you and your family, and her loss means as much to me as well. A sister who was always a friend and protector in our early years. She loved her family and animals, from the squirrels on her deck to her horse in Corner Brook.
Heidi, all of us will miss you. We trust the walking you loved will be with you again in your new home

Heidi Martin

To the Martin family - Heidi’s wonderful supportive family and care givers.

To Don, with whom she must have had a wonderful warm connection.

Heidi walked tall and gracious in her lifetime.

We had the privledge of knowing Heidi and her family when they moved to NL and Canada.

May her spirit be traversing the hills and valleys Heidi skied in Newfoundland and Labrador.

A wonderful memory.

Sincerely,
Brenda LeDrew Keyes

Hello to all of you
I meant to have sent this before and should have, but Ed’s passing ( and me hearing on Feb 28 that it wd be imminent ) wasn't far behind Heidi’s. Your mother was so kind to me when I first arrived in CB in late April -73 right after Third year exams , along w Leonard. We called her when Shelly’s cat ( Smokey) got up in bonnet of my SUV in the early 80s and was severly hurt when I started my car; Heidi came and looked after Smokey, took her to the vet, etc. she also cared for me at least twice ( once in CB and once in Ottawa). We all loved her very much - she was bright and kind. I remember her up at the farm in Humber Village.
A wonderful person.
My regards to all
Noel (& both my families)
Carol and Shelly pass on their condolences too; I sent the Obit to them as soon as I received it.
PS- I’m dropping a donation in the mail to the home there in her memory).
