EVELYN WINNIFRED JOHNSTON (nee Gilchrist): Peacefully at The Wales Home, Richmond, Quebec on October 23rd, 2007 at the age of 94. Born in Kirkdale (South Durham). Evelyn, the eldest of the Gilchrist girls, was predeceased in 1995 by her beloved husband Elroy whom she married in 1939, and much loved daughter Sylvia in 2006. Left to mourn are son-in-law Nils Bodtker and family Brent (Fiona, Tommy and Olivia) and Britta (Scott Silverberg and Heath), all living in Calgary; also sister Marjorie Barlow (the late Murray Barlow), sister-in-law Dorothy (the late Herbert Gilchrist). Many nieces and nephews and their children and grand-children will miss her dearly. Upon receiving her teaching certificate from MacDonald College at age 16, Evelyn taught in the one-room schoolhouse which is now the “sugar-shack” on the Wales Home farm. The family lived in Asbestos, Lennoxville and Keene, N.H. prior to Roy and Evelyn moving in 1987 into an apartment in The Wales Home where they both lived out their lives in complete comfort. At Evelyn’s request, her remains have been cremated, a private graveside prayer for the family will follow and a memorial gathering to celebrate and pay tribute to her life, will be held at 6:00PM, on Saturday, November 10th 2007, in the living room of the Wales Home, 506 Rte# 243 N. Richmond, QC. The family thanks all the staff at The Wales Home for providing Evelyn with every comfort and all the attention she required. There was never a complaint. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Wales Home Foundation,506 Route 243 N. Richmond J0B 2H0, earmarked "In Tribute to Evelyn (Gilchrist) Johnston" are welcomed and WILL BE MATCHED DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR by “the Bodtker family bank”.
