VAHEY, Elsie

1930 - 2024

VAHEY, Elsie (Gorman) nee Catt – It is with great sadness the family of Elsie (Gorman) Vahey announce her passing at Teck-Pioneer Residence on Friday May 3, 2024 at the age of 93.

Elsie was predeceased by her parents James and Mary Catt (McCarty), her siblings Mary Snedden, James Catt and George Catt, her husband Ed Gorman, her second husband Herb Vahey, in-laws, Dorcus Teeple, Faye Moxam, Sonny Gorman and Gail Rhoda.

Elsie is survived by her children Lyn Gorman (Keith Barrington) of New Foundland, Bob (Paulette) Gorman, Gail McGibbon (late Dan), Dave (Debbie) Gorman of Brampton as well as several nieces and nephews. Also survived by her “chosen sister” Betty Stewart (Wayne), her stepdaughter Sharon Vahey of North Bay, her sisters-in-law Floy Catt, Lois Catt, Gloria Laporte, and brother-in-law Don Moxam.

She leaves 10 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.

Elsie was described as a beautiful woman who was loved by everyone she met. Her dedication to her family and community was a testament to her values. An entrepreneur, Elsie and her husband built and operated a Chrysler Dealership, West End Motors in 1968, the current location of Lakeshore Motors. Later Elsie, along with her daughter Gail, would teach crafts and held quilting classes to many in the community.

She was a member of the Kirkland & District Hospital Auxiliary, and a long-time member of the Catholic Woman's League.

As an avid outdoors woman, Elsie enjoyed many years with Ed at the cottage on Kenogami Lake. The road going to their cottage was named Gorman Road for the hard work she and Ed did to maintain the road throughout the years.

Elsie also enjoyed traveling the world with family and friends, to Hawaii, Bahamas, Ireland and Italy just to name a few.

In Lieu of flowers, donations in Elsie's memory may be made to the Teck-Pioneer Residence – Activity Fund (145 A Government Road East, Kirkland Lake, ON P2N 3P4).

Gail and the Gorman Family

So sorry for your loss. Loosing a mother is never easy it no matter what earthly age they achieve. The one comforting thing you know is that she will be reunited with your Dad and smiling as they remember all of their good times together especially the love of their children.

I wish I could make it back to be with you. Unfortunately my health does not allow it but my thoughts are with you. I loved my Aunt always. She always had an ear to listen and sound advice when asked. She always had a “ love you” any timed we talked or saw one another. She was an amazing lady and a good sister to my mom.
Her place in heaven is ensured.
Take care. Love you
Linda

I spent a very long time trying to think of the right words to say.
Loosing your Mom is monumental.
She was a beautiful, strong fearless Mom, wife and Mother.
She raised a good man.
We all love you.
I wrote a whole long story and posted it in Facebook.
Unfortunately I repeatedly tried ,to copy and paste in this site but it wouldn’t work.
Our thoughts will be with you all on Thursday.
You were very fortunate to have such an amazing Mom.
Elsie enjoy your journey, heaven will love you.
Your my hero… A LIFE WELL LIVED… MY DEEPEST CONDOLENCES AND ADMIRATION

I’m so terribly sorry at the loss of your beautiful Mom! I have heard so many wonderful stories of Elsie over the years and was so very impressed that she sold her condo and bought a house at 90, what a true inspiration! My heartfelt condolences go out to you and your family. I’m so truly sorry! Rest in paradise Elsie, or show them how to have fun! ️

I am saddened to hear of Elsie’s passing. During our crossing, I came to know Elsie as a kind, soft spoken lady. Elsie always offered a warm smile and an occasional quick joke I’d never see coming. I remember Elsie helping me fold napkins; I came back to a perfect pile, finished with a bunny ornament positioned like it was the one who did the job. It brought a smile to my face and is one of the impacts I carry in my heart when thinking of her. It was a gesture only a loving mother and grandmother would think of doing. Another time I shared joy sharing with Elsie that my grandfather was the principal in a graduation photo of one of her children posted on her bulletin board - a soothing reminder of the comforts of a small community. Sending my love to family and friends as you mourn the physical loss of a beautiful soul.
