Aplin, Edwin Nicholas "Nick"

APLIN, Edwin Nicholas "Nick"

1933 - 2024

Edwin Nicholas "Nick" Aplin, 91, of Ottawa, born March 3 1933 in Toronto, died September 13 2024 in Ottawa, by heart attack.

Nick was ex-husband of Olga (Lenko), husband of the late Hanna Clemann, friend of Cynthia Knoll and Janet (Amina) Berketa. He was born to parents Elinor (Leef) and Edwin Miller "Ted" in Scarborough.

Nick attended RH King Collegiate in Scarborough before taking his Master's in Civil Engineering at the University of Toronto, graduating in 1962. He worked as a civil engineer specializing in wood structures until he retired in 1995, devoting his life thereafter to various social causes and to his family and his many friendships.

He was an avid outdoor enthusiast, pursuing canoe camping and later whitewater canoeing, with family and friends. He was a marvelous camping companion, enjoying camp cookery and overcoming the many challenges that present themselves in those situations. In addition to Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, and Northwest Territories canoe routes, Nick travelled to other interesting places also off the beaten track---China, Burma, Paraguay, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Baffin Island---as well as to France, Switzerland, then-Czechoslovakia, and elsewhere with his beloved Hanna. He even visited the United States.

Nick is survived by his sister Jacqueline, his four sons David, Peter, Stephen, and Attila, his grandsons Declan, Leif, and Dorian. He was preceded in death by siblings Frank (2020) and David (August 2024), and parents Ted (1973) and Elinor (1995).

Through his life, Nick was a warm and active socializer, genuinely enjoying the company of others, was boundlessly generous and showed exemplary forbearance. He loved reading, good bread, good Scotch, cross-country skiing, weather of all kinds, and quiet summer evenings with family and friends on the dock at his beloved Clear Lake cottage.

In accordance with his stated wishes, Nick will be aquamated and his remains scattered at places sacred to him, at later times. He was a longtime supporter of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, and those wishing to make a donation in his memory may want to consider helping that organization.

Peter and family

Like many before me, I wrote a note of conference and appreciation for all his contributions on Facebook. A truly unique person and positive person whose leadership by example impacted all of us.
His memory should be shared to a wider audience. I would suggest a submission to the Globe and Mail's Lives Lived obituary column

David and Camelia and Declan (and family)

Our hearts are heavy with the loss of your father (grandfather) Nick. He was such a genuine individual with a warm heart. We always felt welcomed, invited and engaged when in his presence. There was always great food, great Scotch and endless conversations to the wee hours when visiting at the cottage. He knew what was important in life, fought for others and was happiest when his family was around him, even in the "busy-ness" of life. He will be missed and we can only imagine the quiet space that remains. May you fill it with the best memories and cherished moments. All our love and kindest thoughts, Chris, Leigh and Billy

Nick's Family

Tears came to my eyes as I learned tonight by online query of Nick's passing. Nick set an example of living a good life with compassion and support of those around him. On our regular walks, we shared good conversations, and concerns for social issues and the environment. We also independently both enjoy / enjoyed cross country skiing, bicycling, white water canoeing, hikes, wilderness, engineering, and independent living. Having recently also lost my dad, I feel for you. In our conversations, Nick's love for you was evident. We are all blessed that despite growing up in the depravity of the dirty thirties and WWII, Nick had unusually good health to the end, that the end came quickly, and that he got to share 12 years with us beyond the average male life expectancy of 78. It was only on our last few walks that Nick slowed down, and took opportunities for a rest seated at a park bench. Normally we walked at a brisk pace. May memories of our good times with Nick temper our current grief.
