To the Pope and the Maskell families
My deepest sympathy.
I take the liberty to share with you a personnal souvenir.
I met this woman for the first time in 1959. I was then in my early 14, and having my first student job at Mr. Almon H. Pope Grocery Store. I would sort bottles in the cellar, pack the shelves, etc.
Then, one very nice, hot sunny afternoon of july, monsieur Lionel tells me to stop doing what I was occupied with and to come with him to go to his house. I was glad and proud, seated beside him, a man that I admired, riding in the pick-up to do something, much more fun than working with cans and bottles : mow the lawn !
It was a big enough lawn so that I was out of the store for a good period of time.
But what I appreciated the most to be the summum of happiness was when Mrs. Pope would come out of the house, carrying a tray with and offer me some cold Kool-Aid with ice cubes and a biscuit or a cake to eat. It was the biggest reward of the day. A very happy day.
I loved Lionel and Doris. They were the first anglophones adults that I laughed with. And taught me my first words of english so I can salute both their memory.
Thank you

Pope family my sinceres sympathies
Doris was a beautiful lady!
She was always well-dressed and proud.
She received me and her grand children at her house for visits with a cup of tea and homemade cookies, she always spoke French with me and also had a very funny stories to tell. She was like a mother to me.
There will always be a space in my heart for her.
