Dainty, E. Don

DAINTY, E. Don

1931 - 2024

Ernest Don Francis James Dainty (Don), age 93, passed on to the spiritual world on July 26, 2024, at Robertson House Retirement Residence in Bells Corners (Ottawa), Ontario. He is survived by his loving wife, Diana; son, Eric; daughter, Catherine Carry; son-in-law, John Pyl and previous son-in-law, Del Carry; and grandchildren, Tessa and Aleqa Carry.

Don was born to Ernest H. and Gertrude Dainty on June 1, 1931, in Toronto, Ontario. He grew up in Forest Hill Village attending the University of Toronto Schools for boys. He was a boy soprano in an Anglican church choir and studied piano (his father was a Chopin Master, composer and conductor whom Gertrude managed). Don completed his BSc and MSc in Mechanical Engineering at the U of T and married Diana in 1956 (68 years!) before moving together to St. Catharines, Ontario to assist the Bahá'í community and begin his engineering career. Then in 1962 he, Diana, and young children moved to the Ottawa area where he joined the federal government. He ultimately became principal scientist at the Mines Branch of Energy, Mines and Resources working to improve mine and diesel engine safety until the age of 60 and then part-time until 70. He traveled widely to share the research findings and investigated two of Canada's mine disasters.

He volunteered for community groups wherever he lived. He studied the Holy Bible extensively writing numerous documents and a few publications relating his research to the Bahá'í Writings. He delivered numerous talks on these and other spiritual subjects. Don deeply loved Bahá'u'lláh, the Prophet Founder of the Bahá'í Faith and tried to emulate and share His teachings throughout his life. Don had a positive and encouraging influence on all who crossed his path, taking an interest in everyone he met. He loved to help all ages with their education. He was a great dad!

His favorite place was the Westport Cottage where he loved to mow the grass on his John Deere tractor, build things and with Diana, entertain the numerous guests that passed through.

To the Dainty Family

We are truly saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Dainty. He was such a big part of our community at UHO for so many years. He always popped in my office to say hello as he counted the hallway laps in order to keep up with his fitness. He always had kind things to say about the staff. It is a great loss. Please accept our most sincere sympathies.

Your friends at UHO

The family of Don Dainty

To the Family of Don, please accept my sincere condolences for your loss. I knew Don for several years in a professional capacity and, having only today learned the sad news, I posted the following on my Linkedin page:
°Today, I learned the sad news of the passing of a great pioneer in the world of diesel emissions control and, especially, diesel particulate filters. I have many good memories with Don Dainty, previously of the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Canada and, early in my career in Canada, he was an inspiration to me. It was with his support that my Canadian company, RCS, embarked on the first large scale demonstration in the world of particulate filters and when the company won the Canadian gold trophy for business excellence for this work, he wore for many years the accompanying lapel badge, as he knew that it was because of his contribution and support
When we moved from the Diesel Advisory Panel of the 70s, a diesel emissions research project funded by the US, Canada and Government of Ontario, through the Ad hoc Committee, I saw the need for a regular conference and it was on my insistence that it should be a public/private initiative. So, Don was my co-chair of MDEC (Mining Diesel Emissions Conference) and I enjoyed many meetings on this subject, so dear to us until we both stepped down for fresh blood to move the Conference into a Council. I am sharing a photo from when we were presented with awards from the then committee at my last conference in 1999.
To me, MDEC is one of those excellent examples of public/private cooperation, where the synergy rapidly advances the benefit of evolving technologies.
Thank you Don, for your wisdom, support and enthusiasm that is never forgotten."
