CHARETTE (RET), Corporal Jeffrey Dwight

1949 - 2023

September 15, 2023, Corporal Jeffrey Dwight Charette (Ret), 74, passed away peacefully at Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice surrounded in love with his family at his side.

Jeff will be missed by his loving partner Sandy Jones, his children Sonny Charette and Carrie Roxburgh, his grandchildren Jack and Olivia Charette, Max, Liam and Kaeleigh Roxburgh, and his son-in-law Jamie Roxburgh.  He will be forever remembered by his siblings Bob Charette (Karen), Karen-Lee Andrew (Mark), Michele Rutledge (Ken), Kathy Charette and Ross Charette. As well as the Jones Family, Alan Jones (Bonnie), Debbie Sladden (Bob), and Kirk Jones (Joanne).

Jeff was a kind and loving uncle to Chelsea Latvala (Jeff), Maris Weir, Laura Andrew (Daniel), Dana Andrew (Randi), Dustin Andrew (Tiffany), Mary Jones (Gregory), Anna Skoberg (Shawn), Tess Bell (Nathan), Mia Rutledge, Jake Rutledge (Heather), Terry Charette (Tanya), Tracey Charette (Max), Brian Jones, Christopher Jones, Michael Sladden (Courtney) and Kim Sladden (Ryan). Jeff will be remembered fondly by all his grand-nieces, grand-nephews and extended Charette, Grimes, Jones, and Chad family.

Jeff was predeceased by his parents, George and Dolores (Grimes) Charette, his brothers, Jay Charette and Kerry Charette, and the mother of his children, Cheryl Chad.

Born in 1949 in Arcola Saskatchewan, Jeff was dedicated to a life of service.  When he was just 14 years old, Jeff joined the 44th Independent Field Battery. The minimum age for joining was 16, Jeff kept saying he forgot to bring his driver’s license and that went on for 3 years. He then joined the First North Saskatchewan Regiment. His career started in 1970 with the Correctional Service of Canada, Drumheller Penitentiary.  In 1978, he pursued his life dream to become a Mountie.  After graduating from Depot in Regina, Jeff began his service with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Burnaby, BC where he became a seasoned investigator, and a member of the detachment’s Emergency Response Team. In 1986 he was among the first selections for Canada’s first permanent counter-terrorism program, the Special Emergency Response Team (SERT). He served proudly with the SERT until April 1993, when that national security responsibility was handed off to the Canadian Forces, Joint Task Force II.  Jeff then joined the RCMP HQ’s Criminal Intelligence Directorate, and later the National Peacekeeping Branch, while serving through the Canadian Police Arrangement in five multilateral overseas missions:  Croatia, United Nations Peacekeeping Mission (1993-1994), Bosnia, United Nations Peacekeeping Mission (1997-1998), Kosovo, Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Peacekeeping Mission (1999-2000), Kosovo, Logistics Officer, Canadian Police Contingent (2001-2002) and Jordan, Jordanian Police Training Centre (2004-2005). Jeff was very grateful for all the opportunities that he was given to serve his country. When was asked about his favorite experience, Jeff would say: “All of it.”

Jeff was a fun and kind-hearted soul who loved his family and friends.  He treasured family gatherings from small Sunday dinners to huge reunions in Western Canada on the various family farms.  He loved to watch his grandchildren play sports, perform in plays, and hear their chitter chatter. He travelled to more than 45 countries, saw the World, helped many a person and cherished the friendships around the Globe.  Watching his beloved Montreal Canadians, cooking for his sweetie Sandy, enjoying a pint with friends, his humour, wit, and helpful humble nature were all part of the package.

The family would like to thank Dr. Milla Djuricic, Tom Birkhan, the QCH Team, and Hospice Care Ottawa for their dedication, care, and support.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Orleans Branch 632, 800 Taylor Creek Drive on Saturday, October 14th, 2023, beginning at 12:00 pm, a luncheon will be served.

In lieu of flowers, donations would be greatly appreciated to support one of the following charities or a charity of your choice:

Our deepest sympathies to you and your family. You have been the cornerstone of the family for many years following the passing of your mom. Jeff was a very good friend and mentor to many of us in our troop when we were all so young and inexperienced. He will be missed and remembered always.

Jeff's family

Jeff was a first-generation SERT member with outstanding abilities and a keen sense of humor. Most memorable for me was that Jeff could move in five directions simultaneously while maintaining an intelligent conversation with those around him. That is precisely what he did throughout the meat grinder, during SERT selection. I was impressed. His eyes betrayed a man of mischief except when things got serious. He could be serious, but never longer than absolutely necessary. I smiled whenever I saw him lope into a room because I knew his dry wit was not far behind. He performed with skill and light and is one fellow who I will always remember with respect and fondness.

Sandy

Such hard news to accept for all of us who are counted among the large tribe that is Jeff's family and friends. Jeff was a mounted policeman of the old school - a rock solid fella with a keen whit and mischievous sense of humour. We had all too many shared memories of 'maintaining the right in all the wrong places'. Through his long involvement in RCMP International peace support operations, he was a man much admired: intrepid, resilience and courageous.
I am a phone call away, Sandy. Anytime, anywhere.

Dear Sandy and family

There are not enough words to express how lucky I was to have met you in 2005.
I was literally lost and fragile in Ottawa and you both came and rescued me.
You opened your house, filled me with love and must of all... gave me a family.

I remembered how you took me under your wing, introduced me with next door Pat and end of the street doctor.

There are so many memories I have, all filled with love, care, protection, selfless affection and always a smile and a hot supper.

I understood the difference between "house and home" while living with you.
I still rememer Jeff´s freshly baked bread at 05:00. Every morning you both prepared a peanut butter sandwich for me to take to school.

You took me for my first snow fight and snow angel in your back yard. And always waited for me awake. You also took me to my first Scottish pub.
I was so confused with the food and asked Jeff what Haggis was. He said with that hidden laugh on his face " You don´t wanna know.... try it and I´ll tell you later" hahaha
He also explained hockey to me (and the fights...), the RCMP, how to cook hummus, shrimp pizza, rice.

Oh my, so many memories...

He got so serious when I tried to do the dishes. He said I was a GUEST and "no no no lady, no one messes with my pots, go back to the table and have a glass of wine with Sandy while I do the dishes".

When I graduated you both sent me a greeting card with a airplane, wishing me the best and a world tour of success. "J & S xxoo"

Jeff, I will always be thankful for all your help and protection. You will always be a truly gentleman around us. God bless you my friend.

Sandy I wish I could be there for you. I will be in prayers. Please remember I am always a phone call away.

With love,
Patty

The Family of Jeff ♥️

Please accept our sympathies and condolences and we are so sorry for your loss. We had the good fortune to work with Jeff on SERT. He was hard working, dedicated, loyal, and always had a smile on his face which was infectious. Jeff was on the Sniper Team with Ted and I was office staff. The close knit of the Team was so enviable to me and I always looked forward to seeing Jeff for a chat or catch up when he was in the office. Jeff was concerned about me running to work so he even took occasion to meet me one morning when I decided to do a longer route to work just to make sure I was okay. We too had occasion to host Jeff for dinner when we were in Regina and he regaled us with stories from his UN tours. An honourable Gentleman who contributed immeasurably and who will be greatly missed. Rest in peace Jeff.

Sandy & Family

Jeff was a true gentleman. I still remember his excellent reading of the Butler in "The Importance of Being Earnest" at a Christmas party...in his best British accent. I often use his expressions "Fromagement" and "C'est la guerre". In the few brief occasions we met, he left such an amazing impression.

May you find comfort in the many treasured memories of your beloved.

Please accept our deepest condolences. You and the whole family are in our prayers.

May Jeff enjoy Eternal Peace.

Sonny, Carrie and Family ...

Words can't express the loss of such an impactful soul and the 45 years of knowing his smile, mannerisms and the always-present, mischief in his eyes. I miss him already. I can only hope he is truly at peace. Please accept my sincere condolences for your loss.

OMG it's just by happenstance that I saw this notice and as you can well imagine I was shocked. While your dad and I had not kept in touch for quite some time the friendship we forged when in Burnaby lasted despite the hiatus in our meetings. I will forever cherish the Sunday dinners at your house while you were just little wee ones yourselves and having your dad as my partner "in crime". He was the best person to guide me and support me at work and guided me while I still had some growing up to do. Despite our sporadic encounters whenever we saw each other it was just like old times. I am so so sorry for your loss. Too young to leave us yet his legacy will live on with both of you and in your children. Fondly, Louisette (Lou).

“I met Jeff on his first shift in Burnaby. I was doing radar on Winston Churchill and this car sped by well over the speed limit. I pulled the car over and Jeff identified himself as a new recruit and was late for his first shift. He was embarrassed and I could not hold back a little chuckle as I welcomed him to Burnaby. He got off with a simple warning. We ended up working together in Zone 2. Hell of a cop who you could always count on. Jeff made a difference and that is the best tribute .”

Dear Sandy,
Bittersweet, I can only imagine may describe it. What a hole Jeff's loss must leave, and how many joyful memories of joy, love and growth must also fill you. What a treasure it is, I believe, to love and be loved as you and Jeff have done so deeply. And loss may be in proportion to how deep the joy was you shared. Jeff's life although now ended is certainly leaving the world a much better place, for how well he lived it and well he served others.
'May the long time Sun shine upon you. All love surround you. And the pure light within you, Guide you on your way...'
