Armstrong, Billie-Jean

ARMSTRONG, Billie-Jean

1947 - 2023

It is with Great Sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Billie-Jean Armstrong (nee: Boyd), June 14,1947 to May 22, 2023.

Billie-Jean Armstrong, of Virginiatown, Ontario died on May 22, 2023 while under the talented Palliative Care team at the Kirkland Lake and District Hospital. She was under the skilled care of the FOURTH Floor Nurses and Dr. Sara Kurki. A wonderful team of experts made Billie-Jean’s last hours/days on earth easier to deal with. Billie-Jean died from complications of COPD. Billie-Jean died with her husband holding her hand, her best friend Cheryl White holding her other hand and her friend Crystal Cannon at the bedside.

Billie-Jean was a skilled housewife and Co-owner of Armstrong Transportation of Virginiatown, Ontario.

Billie-Jean was predeceased by her middle son Brian Meredith Armstrong on January 10, 2023,
Grand Parents-in-Law Hugh and Bella Armstrong of Cobalt, Ontario and her Grand Parents Archie and Jean Boyd of Kirkland Lake

Billie-Jean was also predeceased by her Father-in-law Hugh Armstrong and Mother-in-law Hazel Armstrong of Virginiatown, Ontario, her parents Bill and Andy Boyd of Timmins, Ontario and her brothers-in-law Richard Alfred Hugh Armstrong of Kirkland Lake, Ontario and David Sydney Armstrong of Campbell River, B.C.

Billie-Jean leaves behind her ever-loving husband of 57.5 years, Merdy Armstrong of Virginiatown, Ontario, her sons James Andrew (Shelly) of Talbot, Tennessee and Hughie William of Kirkland Lake, Ontario, her Sister-in-law Patricia Armstrong of Virginiatown, Ontario, her Brother Peter Andrew Boyd of Mississauga, Ontario, her Stepsisters Marna of Ottawa, Cathy of Timmins, Heather of Texas and her Step Brother Ian of Timmins.

Billie-Jean was a proud grandmother to Jordan Armstrong of Ottawa, Ontario, Taylor Armstrong (Summer) of Timmins, Ontario, Nathan Armstrong (Ashley and daughter Amelia) of Talbot, Tennessee and Great Grandmother to Grayson James Carman Armstrong of Timmins, Ontario.

She also leaves behind her best friend Cheryl White of Virginiatown

Billie-Jean was a talented housewife who could cook/bake almost anything. She was an extremely talented knitter and crocheter, and her output of sweaters and Afghans was almost beyond belief. With a can of “PEPSI” beside her she worked away for hours and hours. She made an Afghan for almost all of her friends and relatives children.

Billie-Jean was co-owner of Armstrong Transportation and drove people all around any place in Ontario. She put on hundreds of thousand of kilometers over the many years she drove.

At the Armstrong house on the weekends, especially Friday night one never knew how many of her sons had friends over. Many times she received calls from parents wondering if their kid(s) were at her place. By counting pairs of shoes/sneakers all about the back porch, one could estimate how many kids were over. Her refrigerator door never stopped opening and closing those times. She was MOM to most of her sons friends. Billie-Jean had a keen, great sense of humor and would always be cracking jokes. Many times she could see the humor in many trying situations which sometimes helped get through some tough times.

Billie-Jean will be very greatly missed by her surviving family and friends. Especially her husband Merdy. Their house will be so empty now with her passing.

Billie-Jean lived in many different parts of Canada such as the following: Virginiatown and North Virginiatown, Hamilton, Kirkland Lake (Chaput Hughes), Cobalt, Haileybury; Thompson, Manitoba; Port Radium, NWT.

Billie-Jean has been Cremated and there will be no viewing or service.

There may be a combined celebration of life for her Son Brian who passed on January 10, 2023 and Billie-Jean at the Royal Canadian Legion in Virginiatown but details have still to be worked out.

I offer my heartfelt condolences on the passing of your dear wife - Billie-Jean.

I had the pleasure of knowing Billie-Jean in her capacity as the Co-owner in the Armstrong Transportation team. As she seemed to be the co-owner in command, she certainly relished and thoroughly enjoyed her role in transporting people to Toronto.

In our many excursions, she always had a smile, a joke to share, an encouraging word, certainly a strong opinion, and the most appreciated at the end of a long haul a huge "hug".

Kirkland Lake and area will definitely miss Billie-Jean - an absolute gem of a person.
