Barbara Custeau

1960-2024

We are saddened to announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Barbara Custeau at home on May 12, 2024, at the age of 63. Barb was the beloved wife of Douglas Sullivan and daughter of the late Edward Custeau and May Gagnon.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children Lynzey (Sebastien) and Kody (Vicky and granddaughter to be) as well as her sister, Judith Custeau, and nephews Thomas (Karine) and Jason (Jenn and great-nieces and nephews).

Barb to most, Barbie to some, and mom to others, she was a pillar in the community, and she will be deeply missed by those that knew her and even those she knew in passing.

Visitation will take place on sunday May 19 at Cass Funeral Home, 3006 College St. Sherbrooke, from 1:00-3:00 pm and 6:00-8:00 pm. The funeral will be on Monday May 20 at Hope Community Church at 10:00 am, followed by a light luncheon at The Hut, 300 St Francis St. The burial will be on Tuesday, May 21 at St. Michel Cemetery in Sherbrooke at 11:00 am.

The family would like to thank the emergency services who responded (police, firefighters, and ambulance) as well as the Hotel Dieu staff for the excellent care given.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to support the LES Tutoring Program (by cheque sent to Lennoxville Elementary School with memo “In memory of Barb Custeau” at 1 rue Academy, Sherbrooke QC, J1M 2A6) or the Gaiters Football team online at https://www.ubishops.ca/alumni-relations-and-philanthropy-office/donate-now/ or by calling the University Alumni Relations and Philanthropy Office at 819-822-9660

The family

Our deepest sympathies go out to Douglas, Lynzey, Kody, Vickey, and family. When I learned of Barb's passing, I felt like I had been sucker punched in the heart. Barb was a friend, but also one of my first students as a Drama teacher at Alexander Galt High School. She was a great lady and an effervescent presence in class and the theatre. In a sense, Barb was my first leading lady, playing Mrs.Stanley in a 1978 production of, "The Man Who Came to Dinner". Barb and a couple of her friends (Mhari and Siobhan) gifted Murray Head's, "Say It Ain't So" at the cast party. Barb loved the title song and so did I. I'm not yet ready, but one day I will dust off that album, and once again listen to, "Say It Ain't So". Alas, alongside happy memories, sadness will flood in...not unlike the masks that are the symbol of the theatre...and "a mirror held up to life". Rest in Peace, Barb.

The Custeau-Sullivan family

My sincere condolences to the family. Barb was an incredibly kind and thoughtful woman who was extremely supportive of me and my peers' learning endeavours when she assisted with classes in elementary school. Twenty years later when I went to Bishop's University, she still recognized me and remembered my name when I visited the library.

The world has lost a beautiful soul and I wish the family peace during this time of healing.

Doug and the family

Dear Doug, sending my deepest condolences to you and the family. Barb was amazing, so kind, funny and she had a wonderful personality. It was an honour to have known her. She embraced me as an international student working with her in the Bishop’s library and was so helpful and supportive in so many ways. She made my distance from home easier to handle. I am glad I saw her again last year and we were able to catch up after so many years away. I am saddened by this news and I pray for you and the family in the days ahead.

Sending my deepest condolences to you all for the loss of Barb, Barbie & Barbie doll.
I was able to watch the lovely service and tribute to Barb on line from Tennessee.
Barb and I grew up together in the ville.
You talked about her love for Maine. We ventured down there as teenager’s - not sure how we convinced out parents , but it was the 70’s. Will at Kennebunk Beach Barb got caught in the rip tide… I ran out and coached her out of it and then pulled her to safety. Years later when I would come to town with my young son Hugh she would tell the story as if I was a super hero. She wanted Hugh to know the story. In turn it was her love for kids that made a lasting impression.
She was so very proud of you all. I am
Proud to have called Barb a friend️
