ANASTASOPOULOS, Anastasios
1933 - 2024
Professor Emeritus of Concordia University, Anastasios Anastasopoulos (Tasos), a survivor of Italian and Nazi occupations of Greece and the Greek Civil War, graduated from the Athens University of Economics and Business as an accountant, then served as a NATO officer with the American Air force, before attending graduate school in the United States. He received his MA in Economics from Vanderbilt University and his PHD in mathematical Economics from the University of Rochester. In 1965, Anastasios became Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Western Ontario and, from 1967 until retirement, he was Associate Professor of Economics at Concordia University in Montreal. As member of the Institute of Applied Economic Research, he was project leader of a major study analysing the probable economic consequences of Quebec separation from Canada.
Tasos was extremely devoted to his family both here and in Greece, returning to Greece in the summers to be amongst his relatives.
Tasos was a truly warm and empathetic soul. He made everyone he encountered feel special. He was serious and thoughtful, with high ethical standards, yet still a great teaser.
Even at 90, he was passionately doing rigorous economic research, publishing and experimenting with AI assistance in his research. He loved engaging in intellectual discussions for hours. In earlier years, he had loved nature walks, snowshoeing, and canoeing at the Laurentian cottage. He was an exceptionally gifted photographer.
Anastasios passed suddenly and unexpectedly on July 29, 2024. He is survived by his loving partner of 63 years, Susan Fairman, and daughter, Vanessa Anastasopoulos, who will sadly miss his presence so very deeply.
A celebration of life will be held in the fall.
In honour of his memory, donations may be made to Doctors Without Boarders or to the charity of your choice.
